Re: bmw 3 series vs ISx50 sales figures (US feb)

My E34 was the car that showed the world BMW brand had finally arrived and was taking Mercs head on.They were very different, but competed in the same segment, offering different values to customers. Having now driven the IS250 against the E90 and C-klasse, I predict the IS will do the same for the Lexus brand what BMW achieved over 15 years ago. For me, all three brands have different things to offer, and for a complete experience I would love to have one of each! In 1989, I thought to myself the three pointed star brand finally met its match. It has happend again. This time to the blue roundel. I would be a happy owner of any of these top cars; the only difference being that amongst the contenders in this segment there is now a formidable new choice. And I am sure it will steal conquest sales from the next segment down, the fwd cars like Saabs, Volvo, Audi, as well poeple who aspire upwards from the usual Japanese cars to the premium segment.

Of all the reviews on the web, Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear COTY summarized it succinctly: the IS is toe to toe with BMW all the way to 9/10ths extreme driving, at 10/10 the BMW beats it. But the IS beats the equivalent 3-series in refinement, fit and finish, build quality, and the legendary Toyota reliability, and most cruelly, the looks - the brits hate the flame surfacing.

And of course, in Singapore, the price difference between these 2 cars, is CRAZY!

Re: bmw 3 series vs ISx50 sales figures (US feb)

I recently went to test drive the IS250 (expensive version).

It was definitely quieter than my E46, and the steering was so light that I thought something was wrong. I guess it's the years of conditioning driving non-Japanese cars. It's great for parking, but I didn't go long or fast enough round some bends to see how it feels at higher speeds and especially corners.

The seats are very comfortable and they're ventilated, which is a nice touch, although I couldn't feel a thing when I set it to full blast. Build quality is very good, but it doesn't FEEL as good as Audis. However, I didn't quite like the design of the cabin. The dash, steering wheel, meter cluster and especially the FONTS (those really are unappealing to me) didn't speak to me. I found my own car a much nicer place to be in.

It pulled decently but didn't feel much faster than my E46 with a 2.2l M54 engine. It was defnitely not as smooth at the top end and it doesn't sound very good.

One thing that really bothered me was the manual gear selection. When you flip the paddles, into the gear you want, the car doesn't necessarily obey. If it thinks you're being stupid, it will not change. My car does the same thing but the limits are much higher. On the IS250, when I tried to shift down to gear 2 to take a corner at 40kmh, it stayed at gear 3 and I had to flip the "-" paddle AGAIN to force it down. What is that?? There are 2 windows, one to tell you what gear the car is actually in and the other one to tell you what you have selected. I can't think a single reason that I personally would want such an arrangement. Just gimme a gearbox that obeys me and prevents me from making expensive mistakes.

Boot space is much better than my own car. I can only fit one golfbag in my car while the IS can take 3, due to the suspension being further inside the boot. The knee room is quite lacking at the back when compared with my car.

I spent a whole day thrashing the E90 330i at ADT recently and I would say the interior is really ugly. The E46 interior is much nicer in my opinion and the I definitely prefer the IS interior over the E90's. The E90 howver is a much nicer drive. The steering feel, sound and volume of the engine, presicion of it's chasis... is spot on. I can't comment on the IS when driving at 10/10ths but it's going to be a sturggle to beat the E90 especilally with that dead steering feel.

Overall, the IS is a very nice car. It looks good from the outside too, in a Japanese way. However, I'd take a kitted E90 anyday.

BMW better watch it's ass.

i hope this thread does not degenerate into another is250 vs 320 fiasco.

one thing i do not understand. why do they keep pitting the 250 agst the 320? just bcos of price?? come on its pretty ridiculous...if u wanna compare..pit cars with similar engine size agst each other. bmws command a higher price because of many factors...it took a long time for bmws to be where they r. our local magazines sux cos they pit cars based on how close prices are...and of cos its always likely that a cheaper car wif a bigger engine ends up the winner.

Re: bmw 3 series vs ISx50 sales figures (US feb)

I test drive the IS250 last week and as what CBS says, the steering is very light. The E90 have a more firm and steady ride. I don't know about you but I feel safer/confident inside the E90. After driving the IS250 for about 20 mins, I immediately pop back into my car and the smile on my face came back again.

Most people will base their purchase on price e.g. 100k can get me this and that. Even Top Gear sometimes do that too. I will for example, buy the IS for my wife as a 2nd car. For me, I will still drive a BMW and have no regrets after switching from my ex-ride, IS200.

Re: bmw 3 series vs ISx50 sales figures (US feb)

Hhm, I feel that it's only logical to compare cars with a similar pricetag... cos in the real world the budget is one of most impt factor in choosing one's ride. But then again, not all car reviews/comparos are based on price; some are based on category (eg. executive sedans, hot hatches) or better still, co-based on price and category.

That said, no wonder the Evo's always pitted against the Rex... but now the Euro Rex vers are 2.5L leow, what gives then?? ;)

PS: Once there was even an Evo mag article comparing the M6 and Clio 172 Sports (I think) on UK's twisties B-rds... not really logical, but still an entertaining read nonetheless.

toto..is that you on the avatar? you so cute ...mooooaaahh! hahaha!

if there is price parity between Lexus and bimmers, then bimmer will sure gets all the market but then again bimmer marque loyalist will jump ship coz there is no longer exclusivity. Just imagine driving off a 530i at $190K! (hey not a bad idea hor which mean M5 will be at $350K...whoa haha!)

given the bang of the buck GS300 since launched here in sg... how come more and more e60s on the road? so many until buay tahan i am getting rid of e60 soon if i only can find one that fit the heart. and head.and drive like UDM.... sigh! so what is next?

i am waiting to see after the dust settled... will there be more e90s on the road or the IS250?

talked about those journalist still complaining about i-drive and active steering and things like that... what a bunch of crap! Lashing out on flame design a few years back and all now see everybody is copying Bangle backside design now!
