Cold Air Fusion!!! My favourite, always wanted to do something like tat.

Did a DIY on this before but just tat got no space to install the compressor. Its still lying somewhere in my backyard.

Surface area is critical for heat exchange and IMO an evaporator coil (looks similar to a radiator or intercooler) just that the liquid is R134a refrigerant.

Wah... you got me excited again.

I remember saying something about this at the petrol kiosk in the wee hours of the morning. I thought you were joking! Where to get so much dry ice?

Re: Best CAI Ever

this is so ..........out of this werld....i want this for Christmas
So does it need a refrigerant unit or dry ice for this unit?

Re: Best CAI Ever

Nos, CO2 and dry ice too troublesome cos need to top up regulary.

My setup is like an A/C system. So less maintenance cost.

The compressor freezes the evaporating coil at -30 deg C within 3mins and thereafter what u see is white ice all around. Too bad got no space to install the kit.

However, Z4 engine bay looks promising....

Chun bo... if you are keen we can discuss further....

Re: Best CAI Ever

Needs a lot of surface area for heat exhange leh. With the high air speeds, I don't know if that super cold section will have any time to cool the air or not...

Given the outside air flows so fast into the tube, u think "freezer compressor" is actually that beneficial to cool it down?
I had that thot but really wonder if it really is that effective. :whattheh:

think that there might be some cooling but how much cooling is left to be seen.

Yup, surface area is very important here. My gut feel on the dry ice cooling around a pipe will not have a great effect.

It would be much better to use an evaporator coil. Heat exchange efficiency is higher.

Tests have to be done to measure pre coil and post coil temp. Unfortunately the kit cannot be installed.

Eric, and why is it that it can't be installed?

Yo Des,

Basically there's no space to mount the A/C compressor in a 6potter E46 engine bay. No doubt the size of the compressor is only 170mm dia x 150mm height, I still cant find a location in the engine bay.

Tot a best place would be inside the front bumper, infront of the left tyre. Took some measurements and still cannot. Not forgetting I still need a space for the evaporator coil (200mmx200mmx60mm thick) in the same region around and below the left headlight.

So a NO GO situation.

Unless a major re-construction of existing part's locations or take out some auxillaries just to accomodate this kit which I think its too much work and may arise to problems if not done carefully and correctly.

Cheers!
