Lately, noticed that my gearbox no longer smooth.
Sent it in, was told nothing wrong with e gb, but noticed that battery voltage was 12.8v (which they claimed was low).
Car almost 3yo. Mileage only 55k.

So question,
1. What's the normal voltage?
2. Does low battery cause the gb to be sloppy?
3. What are other common symptoms that batt is failing?

I have gotten the warning that battery is not charging twice.

I do have similar issue with you with my e60 523, when send to troubleshoot in friend garage, found that alternator pulley was jammed, replace one and observed for 1 month, no more problem anymore.

My case maybe not suit on your car but you can use it as a guide.

Pulley working fine.
Only popped up twice. Mths apart.

I'm actually more worried about e gb than the battery.
Had an atf changed recently but doesn't help much.
No knocks or jerks, just felt kinda reluctant to change up

hmm... didn't know that low batt will cause sloppy gear change. the one who told you this is from PML or outside ws?

We should swap GBs. Mine doesn't like to downshift

Just replaced my battery.
GB back to normal.

To begin with, there were no jerking etc. It just doesn't feel smooth.
Could feel hesitations in the response. Doesn't improve even after an ATF change.
No problem at all in manual mode.

Gotten a Bosch battery with a slightly higher capacity (so as not to overwork the alternator with an overly large one)
Hope new batt lasts longer.

For the benefit of others, what are the common symptoms of battery failing?

Not so sure if the charging error is accurate.
Mine popped up twice almost 6mths apart.
Once was after hard driving. The other which was much earlier was for no reason.
