Driving over speed limit, beating amber lights top dangerous driving habits

SINGAPORE : A nationwide road safety survey has revealed that Singapore drivers are less inclined to signal when switching lanes or overtaking, but are more careful when it comes to drinking and driving than European motorists.

The month-long survey by AXA Insurance was conducted with more than 500 Singapore drivers, made up of private car owners and taxi drivers.

The survey showed that 60 per cent admitted to committing at least one dangerous driving practice. Driving at more than 10 kilometres per hour over the speed limit and beating an amber light topped the list.

Drivers were more prudent, however, when it came to drink driving, with 24 per cent saying they do not drink at all before taking the wheel.

When asked what would deter them from dangerous driving practices, the top three reasons cited pertained to law enforcement. Personal safety came in fourth, and the safety of others fifth.

Another notable finding was that the only dangerous driving behaviour that women are more likely to engage in than men is answering the phone without a hands-free kit or text messaging while driving.

Drivers who were married with young children were also found to be more likely to engage in unsafe driving practices compared to those married with older children.

Younger motorists between 18 and 34 years of age were also found to be less likely to perceive a breach of safety rules as dangerous driving compared to motorists aged 35 and above.

According to AXA, the most surprising finding, however, was that over 75% of those surveyed gave the wrong answer to the question "What is the speed limit on normal roads?"

Some did not know, whereas others guessed 60, 50 or 30 kilometres per hour. The correct answer is 50 kilometres per hour.

AXA said that going over the speed limit is not only dangerous, it can also be costly when it comes to filing claims.

Henri Gurs, CEO, AXA Insurance Singapore, said: "Between an accident at 50 km/h or an accident at 70 km/h, the damages will be more than doubled."

According to AXA, accident claims have risen from 13 to 16 per cent over the past four years.

I thought beating a red light is a dangerous driving practice. Beating amber light is ok isn't it? :screwedu:

Btw, tomorrow I'll be 35 and will become a safer driver. Survey say one.:)

i think u good at red light ONLY, u never beat red light, u stop & ask price - damalu customer service say one.

Re: Bad driving habits - Are you guilty?

I always drive around 10km/h above speed limit to be ahead of average Joe. It is dangerous to drive in "convoy".

For some of us that dont, there is a reason as to why. Because douchebags will speed up once they see someone trying to filter. There is some who conveniently has stuck the indicator level up their asses and dont use it at all.

I thought the signal lights were 'optional extras' on their car models and they just forgot to order them? lol

Re: Bad driving habits - Are you guilty?

I think there's one dangerous act the survey has missed out:

A car is waiting to turn out from small lane into main road. ("Car A")
Along the main road, a car is fast approaching. ("Car M3')

When Car M3 is still some distance away, Car A didn't turn out into the main road. It remained stone.

Car M3 thought that Car A is waiting for it to pass first before turning out.

Then just when Car M3 is about to reach the junction, say 5 metres away, Car A turned out. Car M3 has to jam braked to avoid hitting the stupid Car A.

Verdict: Most of the time it is due to driver of Car A having poor judgement.

I think there's one dangerous act u missed out too

Robot is waiting to turn out from small lane after damalu. ("Robot")
Along the main road, a few china girls are fast approaching. ("China girls')

When Robot is still some distance away, China girls didn't turn out into Damalu. It remained stone.

Robot thought that China girls is waiting for them to request first before the bargain.

Then just when China girls is about to reach the junction, say 1 metres away, Robot turned out. China girls has to jam braked to avoid hitting the stupid Robot, who ask "how much". The girls slapped Robot & say "we are Sandies la... NNB, come here eat frog legs la, u go find ur chicken la.. pui*"

Verdict: Most of the time it is due to Robot having poor judgement.

Sorry for OT.

I'm serious about the dangerous act of cars turning out from small road. Sometimes it's at night when the driver waiting to turn out cannot see clearly + poor judgement, and then turn out last minute.
A few times I nearly whack into them. I slowed down wait for them to come out, they didn't. When I am a few metres away, they come out. KNN!

Re: Bad driving habits - Are you guilty?

aiya true la, u shld read one of the thread by.... forget who liao.. keke

Re: Bad driving habits - Are you guilty?

I have to admit that I'm guilty of not using indicators to signal my lane change intent especially when traffic is heavy and quite slow.

This is because from my experience, in particular during rush hour, more often than not, if you signal to change lane, the car behind you on the lane you want to change to, will suddenly speed up to try and prevent you from changing to that lane in front of it.

Anyone else experience this? I've only experienced this in Singapore....sigh

Otherwise, I'm usually very "on" about signaling my intent in advance.

The worst place is Bukit Timah Road... Cars turning out to the main Bukit Timah Road from either the left or right.

Bingo. That's where I was talking about.

Got one time, one auntie turning out from Coronation Road into Bt Timah Road unexpectedly, nearly sent my car crashing. @#@$#Q#@!

But sometimes I also turn out from Shelford Road onto Bt Timah road causing other cars to brake. But not my fault leh, I cannot see cleary as it is upslope until watten then downslope to shelford.
