transmission say auto. desrciption say auto or manual. heck i even see a clutch pedal. is this what you call a convert?

Is converting an auto to manual street legal?

I think seller meant manual as those tiptronic gear.

I also think that "clutch pedal" is actually the footrest found in most auto cars.

Original manual are not common & afaik, most r converted. As for legality, i m not familiar so maybe those in the know can share their thoughts.

if there's a pedal beside the brake and footrest, then its A CLUTCH! to be sure, how does the car shift up and down the gears when travelling . . . if you need to depress this pedal with your foot THEN ITS A MANUAL! congrats you have one of the very few manuals around. if the car registration log card says auto tranny or something like 520iA then, legally the car is an auto. converting to manual is NOT illegal provided LTA has been informed in writing and approval in writing given by LTA. then you will received a revised or updated logcard that will state the revised tranny eg. 520i.

converting to manual is NOT illegal provided LTA has been informed in writing and approval in writing given by LTA. then you will received a revised or updated logcard that will state the revised tranny eg. 520i

now this is very interesting. started me thinking abt getting a e34 and converting it to manual transmission. closest i will ever get to an M5... lol!

does LTA provide fixed guidelines to approval? or it's up to them whether they like the car or owner? or is it really about just putting the paperwork together and approval shouldnt be an issue?

mechanically, converting a auto to manual trans; what are the potential complications?

actually, there's not much complications as i have had 2 auto-manual swaps done previously and it was a perfect match. best is to have one of the highly respected site sponsors listed in this site do a proper check on the current engine block (and your future engine block if you intend to upgrade) and your rear axle. then, they would be able to recommend or suggest a good match and other considerations. its not only the engine block - tranny - rear axle but also - prop-shaft - mountings - radiator - exhaust routing - dme - programming - brakes - future upgrades in power.
thats' why for my latest ride it was a manual right from the very beginning.

seems like a rather massive undertaking to swap out tranny for an auto to a manual. hmm... trouble is i dun see any E34 MTs around. everything is pointing me back to an E36 MT yet again.

Can you share what were your previous rides and the total cost to have each swapped?

i have had 2 auto-manual swaps done previously and it was a perfect match.

e36 - done 2001 10k tranny, ecu re-prog, shifter, shift-boot and pedals only.
e46 - done 2004 22k+ tranny, ecu re-prog, pedals, strengthened prop-shaft, rear-end
new ratios, LSD, shifter with lights, shift-boot, etc. minor stuff.
mine you - tranny had to be strengthened in uk.

e46 - done 2004 22k+ tranny, ecu re-prog, pedals, strengthened prop-shaft, rear-end
