I think the comparsion betwen these 2 models might not be fair but in my own opinion they are.
Lets do a comparsion between the two in some different areas:
Engine Comparision:
First , one is a 6 cylinder turocharged and the other a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. In term of smoothness clearly the BMW is much better but the 2.0TFSI is more eagerly to rev to the red line. This is probably due to the better piston and conrod used in the S3 engine compared to the GTi. Also the turbo in the S3 is bigger K04 compared to the bimmer. However , as many will know , a good car is simply not anout horsepower rather is about the handling. Couple with a lighter and shorter chassis the S3 is more fun to drive then the bimmer. The 335 is a more grown up sedan and the S3 is more sporty. But saying that knowing the potential of the 335 engine once tweeted it will be far more better than the S3.
If PML will allowed me to order e car again I will spec a 335 sedan manual, no sunroof , no active steering and normal suspension because I will change the suspension by others.19" is a must for the 335i. So for those who just want to buy a car and don't like to mod then the S3 is a better car to get and at $170k it looks a better buy than the 335.
Handling and Comfort
In term of comfort the 335 will beat S3 hands down . Audi S3 is about performance so the sound insulation is lesser and when on the move air noice is higher. For those that are not used to RWD car when you enter into the corner you will to be careful with your entry speed if not your car will go into oversteer. The quartto on the S3 is simply fantastic for a driver who is not so good he will be faster in the S3 than the 335. The S3 will make a bad driver look good but if you are a good RWD driver then the story will be different but in the wet don't try the quattro is simply a better system I would dare tosay they make the best 4x4 system.I remember on one occassion on the NS highway it was raining quite heavily and I was able to drive fast still .The feedback from the steering on the S3 is better and sharper. I believe t the setup on the 335 is more like a GT rather than a sport. If you ever drive a track bias car than you will know what I meant. That is why till now I have not find a car that have that kind of feel like my Porsche GT3.
I feel that no matter how we mod the car our 335 will never drive like a new M3. We maybe faster on the straight but on the bends we maybe not and in terms of total package we will never be like M3 or else those who buy M3 will be idiot.
Conclusion
In my own opinion , both are great car especially the 335 . The engine alone already justified the cost you paid for the car. If you are a person who like a spirited drive then get the S3 and if you are person who likes to drive fast in a gentleman way then the 335 will be the car. The reason I chose the 335 sedan over the coupe is because the sedan is lighter. So if you are a bimmer supporter and you don't like Audi then wait for the 135i . That will be the new bench mark for hot hatch/coupe.
