Anyone here has changed their gearbox ATF ?
Heard some CSA say that that affects the pressure in the sealed box - accelerate breakdown...
But feel strange to use same ATF for 3 years (ATF degrades with heat/time)...

What do you fellas think ?

Got mine changed!! Wat pressure? Wat accelerated breakdown?? I think if we dun change & drive the same ATF oil forever, our gearbox will kaput faster than the lifetime oil!! hahahaha

Cheers!!

I think there is nothing wrong with the CSA, just the way it was put through together with the way it was received.

The torque convertor is pressured else the gear won't change

The CSA is trying to say that by affecting the residual pressure in the torque convertor (ie changing the ATF) there is a chance that the pressure plate will not sit back the same position that it used to before the oil was released and henceforth, accelerated wearing on the tranny.

The have been incident that after tranny oil change, the tranny slips and the gearbox needs to be replaced.

The way to do it, at the same time minimising the risk is by just removing the oil from the oil sump and replace the tranny filter within the sump only without changing the oil in the torque convertor.

Of course the new and old oil will be mixed but most of the residue will be catch in the filter and by dilution, u still get a relatively new oil....

if you are like 90% of bimmer owners in singapore who dont track their car or abuse it on a daily basis, and just drive normally to office or supermarket, you dont have to do anything extra over and above what BMW recommend. this applies to any oil change, and service, etc.

so judge and see for yourself. ppl here who change their ATF against BMW official recommendation do so coz they use their cars a little more aggressively, or mod their cars.

your car definitely will not spoil if you dont change your atf or your rear diff oil (which is also atf).

I changed mine at 55,000km for peace of mind;)

I am just wondering if there is someone out there who did not change the ATF at all after 5 years and the transmission still alive and kicking?

Yup, my mum's e39 520i is 7 years old. Haven't change the ATF b4 and it is still very much alive. Occasional abuse by me only...
