Re: Alpine H701
yep, there was this thread fm a forum in the states i came across too... it seemed that they detected that the prob was due to overkill...
fm what i remember, the guy was an installer who did the setup for 2 of his customers. being fanatics, he believe strongly, and used dvs (david navones) to tap the signal for them. apparently, the h701 analog input was optimised for 2volt application (of course higher seems better theoretically... noise reduction, higher headroom etc.) but due to the 'too high/good' signals fm the dvs, the hiss became inherent.
he went through of lot of diagnostic checks, (head, amp., 701, cables, suppressors etc.)
to cut the story short, he finally took out the dvs, and the hiss dissappeared... and he posted this. I could not recall the thread link here, unfortunately. it was some diy forum they had there.
as such i wonder if the hiss that you refer to here is similar in nature (too high/good signal). alpine designed the H701 for 2 types of input for typical (optimal) usage:
1. digital network (using with alpine headunits)
2. analog network (for use with OEM headunits, which i believe they optimised for in their design)
the power that the us guy did was 100Wrms active front (2 way) and 75Wrms rear... so i believe most of us would be running in this same range, so i believe his rectification was correct (in isolating that the hiss was caused by too good signals fm the dvs).
fm some little electronics knowledge i recall, it is possible, as the dvs actually 'clean and boost' the signals, meaning they do have components that will not be considered by the alpine engineers when they designed the H701, since the alpine guys will probably use a 'typical' low quality signal, and clean it up internally within the H701, which in turn, if put together with the dvs' signal circuit, might just not match.
i dunno if you will want to give it a shot, and use a 'normal' interconnect instead of the high end dvs for the analog signal we tap fm our headunit. let me know what you think. do you have a live sample of someone with this hiss problem? could he be using some high end convertors too? or even more coincidentally, the dvs, which i noticed that there were some thread discussing the dvs?
hope i am not misinterpreted. david navones are good, but to match it with the H701, it might happen to be too good. if to normal amplifiers etc, i think it's probably one of the best in the business... i'm very tempted to try the H701, personally, cos i still like the 'stock' look (intend to hide the controller into one of our dash board storage area), but yet i want nice clear sound and image/staging. let me know your take? or any other bros who've tried/heard/read?
