Guys,

Need to ask whether for my E46 320 Sedan, Is 235/40/18 better or 225/40/18 better?

I am getting the Eagle F1 GSD3.

Whats the difference?

Thanks.

Re: 235 or 225?

225 is the appropriate/optimal size for 18" wheels, the tyre shop will tell you. There might be a misconception that wider is better. While you wanna have as much tyre contact with the road as possible, there is an optimum limit to this. Having said that, 235 is not too excessive as well. Many brothers here run on 235 on 18".

Bear in mind that your car will already have some negative camber - means that the weight is already not evenly spread over the width of the tyre, and is only further shifted towards one edge (usually inside) of the tyre.

Wider tyres have other detrimental effects such as increased aquaplaning and friction (resistance) as well as increased steering feedback which may be good but up to a point.

In short, increasing the width of the tyre will not necessarily increase the contact patch as the weight of the car is the same. The shape of the contact patch will however change under these circumstances, hopefully to the benefit of lateral (cornering) grip but only if they are fitted to the correct rim size.

225/40/18 is the nearest to ur stock size which do not effects ur speedo by much.
235/40/18 is slightly bigger by 1/2 inch in overall diameter, and due to tat will effects the acuracy of ur speedo reading.

Yah, and I do look like the Michelin man. Time to step into the gym, or my suspension will be severely tested.

Ur rims size is 8J or 8.5J ?

If 8J then 225 is optimal, if 8.5J 235 will look nicer else 225 will look bit too stretched ( this oso depends on wot tire brand u r goin to use coz different brands may hv different tire walls design and construction )

I would reckon most 18" rims come in 8.5J, would it not be the case? What are the rims that are 18" x 8J ?

Actually if you flip through BMW's rims catalog, most if not all 18" rims in there are 8J.

That is very true for OEM rims.

Kenn
Actually there are quite a lot of 8J rims ard too. Some manufacturers make both 8 and 8.5 and some make one or the other.
I hv seen them before. However, most tire shops here bring in the 8.5J coz those are the ones that mostly people are looking for, either because of words of recommendation or else not too sure but that's true.
