Hi Guys,
Am new to the scene.........but I saw a few Bimmers on the road and really like the white lights on the angel eyes and also the white fog lights that matches.
Anyone can advise where to install these aftermarket retro fit? my current ride has already factory installed angel eyes and i read on x5 world that you just need to change an led bulb. likewise for the fog lights. appreciate some pointers.........
Cheers,
Kelvin

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

Welcome back to Bimmer ownership, kvin... ;)

'White' bulbs for fogs, high-beam are easy enough... they are just bulbs... can cost anything from maybe 20 bucks (for the really cheap ones) to a couple of hundred bucks a pair (if from the likes of PIAA)... but you need to note that most of these 'white' bulbs are considered illegal by LTA and will fail inspection... apart from the compliance bit, there's also the fact the although the white-bulbs look great, the truth is that when on dark conditions, they don't light the road very well, and these will be more evident in situations like rain, fog/ mist, and driving on the NS Highway at night...

The 'compromise' is to use Phlips Vision-Plus blubs, which apart from being legal and slighter whiter than stock, they also DO provide more light on the road...

As for the xenon bulbs, you can buy after-market xenon bulbs (with higher 'K' rating) that are whiter than the factory BMW ones... both Philips and Xelux have 'em... can't remember prices...

For the rings, PIAA has LED white bulbs that will make the rings light white... nice... more than 300 bucks of nice though...

Cheers, buddy... 8)

Where to get these PIAA LED white bulbs? I want to get Angel Eyes for my E46 M3. Can I buy a set of Angel Eyes that comes with the PIAA LED white bulbs?

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

got my piaas from autobacs. they have a whole range there.

customer service sucks though.

Angel eyes for all E46's are aftermarket. BMW does not make angel eyes for E46's. As such, all E46 angel eyes on the market should all be Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) by now. Any E46 angel eye kit that uses other lesser technology such as LEDs should NOT be bought as they are very old technology that is dim, uneven and unreliable.

So, you should not need any bulbs when you buy angel eyes for your E46. You may only need halogen bulbs to match the colour of your foglights and highbeams to your xenon lowbeams and angel eyes, if the colour mismatch bothers you.

It's a chain reaction. CCFL angel eye colour temperature is about 6000k. Hence you'd wanna change out your factory xenon bulbs (4300k) to 6000k ones to match your angel eyes. After that you'd wanna change your foglight and headlight bulbs to the same colour tempertaure as your xenons (lowbeams) and angel eyes.

You will never achieve exact matches to your 6000k angel eyes and xenons with halogen bulbs. You can get them close but not exact. Hence many people change their foglights to xenon ones of the same temperature. This involves installing xenon ballasts to power your xenon fogs (simple job).

For the highbeams, most people just use coloured halogen bulbs like PIAA or Philips Diamond Vision. This is becos
1) flashing is bad for xenon ballasts and bulbs, shortens lifespan drastically
2) xenon lights take about 10 seconds to get up to the correct brightness and colour temperature
3) being high up (unlike fogs which are at bumper level), you will need projector lens to control the spread of light in order not to blind people. This is a very difficult mod to make it look OEM as you will need to mutilate your headlight casing.

I think that should answer all your questions.

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

Hi CKB

Thank you so much for your detailed answer. I'll treat you to kopi net time I see you at BVO.

I think this is what I will do:

1. Xenon lowbeams (stick to the stock 4500k)
2. Angel Eyes (6000k)

I will not mind a colour mismatch between the Angel Eyes (6000k) and the Xenon lowbeams (stock 4500k). This may help to make the Angel Eyes stand out a bit more.

3. foglight bulbs (change to 4500k Philips Diamond Vision)
4. headlight bulbs (change to 4500k Philips Diamond Vision)

I feel that foglights and headlights are mostly needed when driving at night on the NS highway and the brighter and the further the throw of the beam is, the better. For this reason, I will use 4500k bulbs rather than 6000k or 8000k bulbs.

Thanks.

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

Mixmaster,

YOu could change to the Philips original 6000K xenon D2S bulb for your low-bean if you want to. You have the flash-light white as well as enough Lm to light up the road.

I bought mine from Eng Soon, pretty happy with them

I used to try after-market Xenon bulb and they either not bright enough or 'short life span ~ 9mths + '.

fyi

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

Aargh! Confusing. Just got hold of a Philips Automotive Lighting catalogue and Philips itself have so many different types of bulbs:

Diamond Vision - Ultimate Blue at 5000k

* 5000k light output, similar to daylight
* Blue reflection remain in headlamp reflector even when turned off
* Same consumption rate as standard halogen lamps
* Headlamp reflector protected by UV-block quartz glass
* Easy installation (no wiring or relays needed)

Crystal Vision - Stylish White at 4300k

* 4300k stylish white light output for easier night driving
* Same consumption rate as standard halogen bulbs
* Headlamp reflector protected by UV-block quartz glass
* Easy installation (no wiring or relays needed)

Blue Vision - Quality Upgrade at 4000k

* 4000k quality light output
* Best high colour temperature bulb in terms of light performance
* Headlamp reflector protected by UV-block quartz glass
* Easy installation (no wiring or relays needed)

Silver Vision - Upgrade Designer bulb with 4000k light output

* 100% design, completely in tone with the silver reflector
* Quality upgrade to 4000k for H4 & H7
* Headlamp reflector protected by UV-block quartz glass
* Easy installation (no wiring or relays needed)

Vision Plus - Up to 50% more light / 10 to 20 meter longer beam

* Up to 50% more light on the road
* 10 to 20 meter longer beam
* Better reflection of road marks and signs
* Headlamp reflector protected by UV-block quartz glass

I am definately going to use Philips Silver Visions for my indicators to get rid of the "egg yolk" effect. But other than Vision Plus which should be legal, are the rest (Diamond Vision, Crystal Vision & Blue Vision) legal?

I don't want the hassle of having to change any illegal bulbs before going for LTA inspection.

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

Only Diamond Vision is technically illegal.

However I passed LTA inspection with them installed as my highbeams. Not even a single question asked. Everyone I lnow with Diamond Visions passed LTA inspections with no problems.

Even more confused now?

Even my stock BMW Xenons & hi beam fail inspection.....

Unless my info is outdated, as far as I remember correctly, for halogen bulbs, only VisionPlus blubs are LTA-legal... and Inspection Centres even have a pair of bulbs with bluish tint pasted on the wall, as example of bulbs that will fail... but... as mentioned, my info may be outdated...

If not mistaken, with the 'tools' that the Inspection Centres have... all Xenon/ HID lamps will 'fail'... because all HID lamps are much brighter than halogen lamps... In which case they'll check and confirm that the Xenons are part of car (factory-installed) and then 'pass' the car...

According to LTA, which kinda makes sense for most parts... reason why they fail after-market HID lamps is cos most all aftermarket ones don't have the ability to focus the beam such that everyone else gets blinded by the light.. and also that most artermarket HIDs don't have ability to tilt the height-level of the beam, which in most cases will blind the driver in front... and eventho some cars have the ability to do both the focus and the beam-angle, in order for them (LTA) to have less of a headache in sorting out who has and who doesn't, they simply blanket-banned all aftermarket HIDs...

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

Hey dude, thank you for your pictorial reply. Fully appreciate!

Cheers.

Re: white lights........bright lights.....

cbk. what is lumen for ur retrofitted xenon that failed the light test? mine is the wilson's OEM 8000k housed in the projector lens (replacing the original 7er 4300K xenon D2S bulb). not sure if it will pass the inspection?
