Which grade of oil is better?

Hi all,

Between 0W30 and 0W40 engine oil, which is the recommended rating?

Understand that PML use 0W40 and I am wondering should I use 0W30 instead?

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

What engine?

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

Why dun u try 5W40?

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

30 has thinner viscosity , easier to warm up but could get too hot hence less protection

40 is thicker , takes longer to warm up but better protection in super hot weather

Would like to know why you recommend 5W40?

From what i read online, correct me if i am wrong, the digit 5 is more for cold weather countries.

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

Fully Synthetic Characteristics

0W-30 Enhances engine performance and power
0W-40 Ensures engine is protected from wear and deposit build-up
5W-40 Fuel economy savings Ensures good cold starting and quick circulation in freezing temperatures. Gets to moving parts of the engine quickly

I use 5W40 because the brand of engine oil only has 5W40 for BMW.

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

which brand u using? am shopping for engine oil at the moment.

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

Amsoil European Formula 5W40.

I find it smoother than Mobile 1 and Caltex (which PML uses)...

For ur strawberry, it should be 0-30 based on BMW LL-01FE.

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

Based BMW LL-01FE, it supposed to be 0-30.

BMW LL-04 is to ensure low sulphur content in the oil.

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

knn now confused by davidtch, since my n52 uses 7 quartz, can i use 3.5 quartz 0w30 n 3.5 quartz 5w40?

I know, i da man..

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

This sulfur thing is more a US problem than other continents but having said that, of cos most will stick with LL-01. But then again LL-04 are also ok and can be used for gasoline engines requiring LL-01

whether any grade of oil is suitable or not requires many Ks of miles before the real effect comes in, and by that time COE maybe expire liao.

Ahwing, its ok to mix oil grades but only once in a while. If you do it on a recreational basis, your engine will explode into strawberry cheese

i love cheese pie!! real cheese pie!!

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

No need wait so long lah. Every time change oil, do an UOA will knock.

In short, use 0-40 if don't want to top up in btw.

Use 0-30 if don't mind top up.

Re: Which grade of oil is better?

Speaking of used-oil analysis (UOA), where can we get something like this done in Singapore?

I used to be on Amsoil European Formula, and am presently on Mobil1. I agree that Amsoil is a tad bit smoother. The only reason why I'm on Mobil1 is that is cheaper.... hahah... Probably might switch back to Amsoil @ next oil change...
