E90 Pfl engine block

Hi all,
The screw thread screwing my e90 Pfl engine block is worn out. Currently the screws are not able to secure the block properly n caused collant water from leakingfrom the block.

My mechanic advise me to change the engine block. Anyone know where I can get used block? Appreciate your advice. Tks

Re: E90 Pfl engine block

Changing the engine block is unnecessary and expensive..... Ask around workshops if they can do a helicoil repair on the existing block. Unless of course if a crack develops - then you will need to change the whole block out.

Re: E90 Pfl engine block

Get a few more opinions before you decide, suggest you ask Dr Rod at R2D to look into this for you.

Worse case, if need to replace check out new from Eng Soon or used/scrap from Propel Auto.

Hi bro ikm
Can u tell me what is a helicoil repair?

Re: E90 Pfl engine block

Helicoil is a threaded insert to "replace" the worn out threads in existing hole, but unsure how durable is this solution under a critical application such as a hot engine block.

Re: E90 Pfl engine block

I had it done on one hole but it affected the rest. Sigh... dun no Wat to do now..

Re: E90 Pfl engine block

Check with propel auto, they have totaled e90 o5/06 lying around. Can get used block from them.

It is deemed to be a permanent repair. I know for a fact that this repair is even done on aircraft parts - which probably has one of the most stringent requirements in the world! If spec'ed properly, the repaired thread is as good as new. I got this off a website:

If it's good enough for nuclear applications, I'm guessing it's good enough for even the fiercest turbo-charged engines we have!

Remember - as with most engineering - it MUST be properly spec'ed.... Can't expect a plastic helicoil to hold up in the engine bay!

Re: E90 Pfl engine block

Wow, quite impressive but how many workshops here can do this helicoil insert?

Good reference to keep in case

Not sure myself... haha..... But my suspicion is that auto workshops that claim that they can do probably outsource it to a specialised non-automotive mechanical or sheet metal workshop that does it....

The point I'm trying to make is that the engineering, technology and product is AVAILABLE. Just need to FIND it....
