Super Factories: BMW z4 ep

Anybody caught the BMW episode of Super Factories on National Geographic Channel? It debuted last week, supposedly will be screened for the final time tmw at 11pm.

i thought it was damn cool, have so much more respect for the car after watching how much thought and effort went into the entire process. Even the paint... man, those robot arms looked damn graceful. It was amazing to see them wash off excess paint while it's still wet!

supposed to be screened one more time Thurs, 21 Aug (later today) at 11pm.

Re: Super Factories: BMW z4 ep

Yeah, specially sat down to catch it last sunday at 4pm. Impressive.... but I thought the process for the Corvette Z09 was even more impressive - esp the paint shop. Workers are tested for dust and stuff before going into the shop - if they fail they can't even enter the paint shop! Then they have to wear biohazrd suit-looking gear to go in... The spacefame construction was also cool. I did find the engine manufacturing of the Z4 more interesting though, with the magnesium insert in the aluminium engine block.

Re: Super Factories: BMW z4 ep

i'd highly recommend anybody at all to pay a visit to BMW's flagship (but small) factory in Munich. It's an incredible experience, guaranteed to make you buy a BMW IF there are no factory mishaps during your visit (during my visit, there were 2)

Re: Super Factories: BMW z4 ep

apparently all z4 are assembled in the US? engine block made in munich and shipped to north carolina, where they slap on the rest of the car.

and it's also interesting to find out that there are more options than PML would want us to know, e.g. sound dampening carpet has 3 different thicknesses to choose from.

Yes, all Z4s are assembled at the Spartanburg factory in the US. I find the JIT system between the seats manufacturer and BMW quite amazing. Manufacturer is only given the seat options like 6 hrs prior to them being required for assembly onto the car - and the seats are assembled and delivered to the Spartanburg plant 1-2 hrs before BMW installs them on the car....
