Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

I discover sometimes after reverse parking, when I disengage R to P, the car produce a loud thud sound. It's a metallic noise. Is this normal? I tried stepping hard on the brake, the sound sometimes still can be heard. By the way, must roll down window to hear it from outside, within the enclosed interior, can't hear it. Need the expert advice, car is 11mths old 320i.

Also sometime coming to a stop at traffic light, car will jerk forward a little.

Last of all, just before the car come to a stop, brake making a creaking sound, normal also? Or is it my braking skill lousy?

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

My brakes experienced the same creaking sound as well, especially when depressed hard, and my ride is only 5 months old. As for the "thud" sound of changing gears, I don't think mine is that loud to get me worrying, it's more of a "click" engaging of gear sound, thought it to be normal.

Maybe the more experienced bros here can help.

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

Is it an auto tranny? What you describe sounds suspiciously like low tranny fluid level, have you checked the fluid level? I had loud thumps, in my auto tranny when changing speed. The cause was low transmission fluid level and loss of hydraulic pressure in the tranny. I replaced the tranny lines and fluid and it was OK.
I would get this checked out ASAP - if your auto tranny fluid is low and you drive for an extended period of time this can be a very expensive repair!
BTW I am talking about an e36 not sure if there is a major difference between tranny design on an e90.

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

As for brake creaking, BMW single piston stock brakes are not the most beefy given the weight of the car. If you have 4K spare upgrade to Brembo or live with it....lol

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

I guess it's not low transmission fluid, the thud sound only appear when I moving from Reserve to Park, and this occur occassionlly. I'm not a car person, didn't know stock brake is weak, got the impression they are super grippy. Brembo on a stock rim might look a little stupid, looks like I better stick with the creak sound till I decide to change rim. Thanks for the advice...

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

The thud will occurs when moving off after you put the transmission into P straight from R. (Like reverse park). U can get rid of the problem by putting the car into N first, let go the foot brake for a second to let the car creep a little before putting the car into P after you finish your reversing. It's the transmission locking the gearbox when u put into P

I ALWAYS AND OLI HEAR A LOUD...AHhhhhh....woooo,,,ahhhhhh...ahhhh..
when ever i engage my GEAR!!!!
anytink wrong....???

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

Are you holding your brakes while shifting to reverse?
The brakes creaking while you stop could be because your brakes are not hot enough yet(should disappear after braking a few times in normal driving), or because the back of your brake pads are not lubricated properly with copper grease.
Just complain the brake creaking to the SA next time you do servicing and make them lubricate the BACK of your brake pads, so that the pads do not vibrate and make noise against the brake pistons.

Copper grease??? Damn.. another new thing to learn. Thanks for the info.
My brake is always depress when I change gear. I think I get hold of how to not make that thud sound. I pause for a sec in between R to P before engage into P, so far no sound heard yet. :)

By the way, i check the car info, the oil change state 17000km, I'm now at 16000km, when will they alert me? Must I go PML to service when the alert comes on?

Re: Loud 'thud' sound when disengaging reverse gear

I had a lot thud after the engine started. feels like the transmission shifted a gear in or something like that. It only happen after engine start and the sound is more pronounced when the car is parked on a slope , even a gentle slope u can hear the thud.

any advice ??

thanks
