High pitch whining noise while driving my X1

I encounter high pitch whining noise (not very loud but audible enough to irritate me) at about 40kmh, 70kmh and in particular 85kmh. I cant really identify where it comes from but my first instinct is engine or tranmission. i sent my car to pml twice but unresslved. The service advisor and technician acknowledge its weird and something is wrong but cant isolate the problem. They told me to send in again next month to do a more thorough check. However, the the service advisor said that there is noise coming from my rear axle after a computer check but still cant identify the actual problem. Somehow, i dont think the whining noise comes from the rear but rather front undercarriage. Anybody encounter such whining noises or any views on what could have happened?

You indicate the noise happening at the 3 different speeds; is it happening at one particular engine rpm? Looks like something is resonating at a particular engine rpm.

Hmm... good question. I didnt really notice. Should be same rpm cos I always accelerate slowly.

Hi, my X1 is 3 months new. I started to realize the whining noise (like air plane engine whining sound) while driving at all speeds last month. To me the noise came from under the car near the front engine. Quite worried so sent it back to PML. The mechanic test drove with me and he immediately identified that the noise came from the back and it was from the final drive. PML had my final drive replaced two weeks ago and the car is now as queit and smooth as new!

Bro, thats exactly what i am encountering now! Sent to pml twice and the said sound from rear axle. Think i had similar problem as yours but they have yet to identify. I will tell them. Whos your service advisor and technical advisor? Mind sharing?

Bro, car bought from pml can claim warranty at munich?? I sort of confused. Do i need to pay if send to munich?

no need. MA is also "authorised" workshop to claim BMW warranty.

PML sells BMW car except ///M
MA sells BMW car ///M only
both are BMW authorised dealer and MA can service & repair all cars sold by PML under warranty (3 years)

alternatively, wait for Lee Shy to share his SA. it would be easier to make appt and change the final drive since the SA is familiar with the final drive problem

My service advisor was Jeffery Seet. Sorry I can't remember the technician's name. It took them about 2 weeks to order and receive the final drive from Germany.

Oh thanks. My SA also told me parts take two to three weeks to arrive from Germany, but never said what parts. Maybe they have already diagnosed the problem. However, I am disappointed that they attempted to act blur about the issue and said only slight noise until I demanded him to see me when I collected my car. I pressed him for a deadline but he couldnt commit. I also dont trust that he said he will call me. I demanded for a timeline and said i will call him in due course. His face black and unhappy. Hah.a maybe I just lose faith in pml do I never trust or believe what they said

After 2 months, 3 trips and total of 8 days finally they replaced my final drive. Driving my X1 has become a pleasure now. If I dont bang table, think they will simply ignore my problem. At least got replacement car and personalised service this time round and the supposedly out of stock parts had suddenly become available. My nightmare is over..... hopefully.
