hi all,

any idea where is our engine oil dip stick located at ? Mine is a E90 (318) and had difficulty locating the dip stick as check light pop out indicating engine oil level low, need top up. Try looking at the manual book but appealing still counldn't find it :confused: Last thing on my mind would be that it was loss :ultrasho:!!!!

Btw, do our engine eats engine oil just like Mazda RX 8 ? Thaks for your feedback.

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

there is no engine dip stick i believe. using on borad computer it will tell u ur oil level in the engine. that little stick on your left of steerign wheel

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

is normal for the oil to be depleted during yr first run in...as is mine during 6-7k i needed to top up.
after the run in... and my first servicing( i did mine at ard 9.5 to 10k).
after that now is ard 13k ... no sign of engine oil depleting.

Yup that's what i had encountered during my trip up Genting last weekend. Engine oil warning level came up when I was travelling along NS highway. I tot I had wack the engine too hard until the engine oil burns out. After top up, the warning light gone :)

Lesson learnt: Always have some spare engine oil in your car. You will never know when you'll need it.

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

Always think the dip stick is simple and accurate...can check oil condition..BMW should adopt simple design that function well.

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

I guess nowsaday ppl dont really pop the bonnet & check engine oil, so they design the warning light.. And the designer also forgot to design the oil level indicator... how to check how much engine oil to pour when level low.. aiyo..

Still prefer the old dip stick, can even smell the engine oil. You can recognise its characteristic smell. If got soldering smell, that's it, engine or some metal inside burnt..

i guess over time they try and incorporate more and more high tech gadgets to replace manual checks. also, some ppl r just to atas to unscrew the cap beneath the bonnet.

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

My oil level always flutuate between 3/4 and Full mark...sometimes I wonder wether the sensor is working properly..electronics life span shorten with high ambient temp.

Its stupid to open the bonnet and top up oil with dirty hand go into the car and check the oil level..doesnt make sense poor egornomics..

mine current ride and previous E90 were never full. always 3/4 mark.

the fluctuations on urs could be due to angle of car.

Hi Thrust,

So what's your end decision top up the engine oil and send in for svcing asap or after topping up remain as it is till due for svcing? I just encounter similiar issue tdy. Did a 1L top up first.

My car is a E90 LCI (facelifted) 318i. I have discovered that between oil changes, i.e. every 12000km, you will need to top up about 1 litre.

When the warning light comes on for low engine oil, you will need to top up 1 litre of oil. So that means to say you will need to top up 250 ml for every 1/4 mark on the electronic oil-level gauge.

The reason given for the oil consumption is that our cars are using 0W40 viscosity engine oils (BMW Longlife-01) in Singapore. Note that you can even use this type of oil during winter time due to the 0W viscosity rating! So the oil is very free-flowing as I understand it. So it is not suprising that the engine does consume some oil. But using such oils will allow the engines to spin freely and therefore give max power.

If you want to reduce engine oil consumption, you might want to consider using 5W40 (BMW Longlife-98). However, I do not think this oil has been certified for our valvetronic engines, only the Longlife-01 oils have been certified.

No need same oil. As long as it is 0-30 (presumely urs is IL6) can already.

1 question here.. can engine oil of different types be mixed?
Why not? As long as viscocity same same, no issue. Oil is oil. No like kopi or teh.

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

Pml does sell the castrol 0w 40 grade but is rather x u can get from giant the mobil 0w 40 grade as well

Re: Engine Oil Dip Stick

Dear Bros,

I'm thinking of changing my engine oil. Currently I'm using the one sold at PML which is Castrol. Any bros have recommendation for other brands of engine oil and where I can buy them?

Thanks

Checking oil when engine is cold will hv different reading compare to engine is hot after a drive.
