Hi guys.. was driving my E36 320im and i found out recently during engine start, the exhaust note was quite prominent heard front the bottom of my car just below my driver side which is the downpipe attached to the cat. During acceleration the sound was quite obvious coming from the centre of of the car and it sound like a motor boat.. car was sluggish from 1st to 3rd gear and car works fine during cruising @ 5 th gear @ 80km/hr..fuel consumption also went up noticeably. Last week when i went for servicing ,the car was jack up and i notice the downpipe attached to the cat area was welded on due to the change of extractors to hiop(previous owner) but i didnt notice if that area was leaking exhaust gas.. until recently felt the noise was getting louder and even with windows up i can hear e sound from my cabin and also the noticeable poor pickup with high fuel consumption..my rpm @ idle was also quite low ard 650rpm. any gurus can advise? If its exhaust issues which wkshop can i refer to then?

PS: i wouldent rule out other factors like faulty O2 sensor which cause the poor acc and high fuel consumption but i can realli hear the note was coming from the centre of the car when i step on the throttle.

Problem Resolved...
Went BVO and ah wee plug in the diagnostic tool and wahlau..cylinder 3 not firing..change no3 coil and plug and car behaves like a 6cylinder again..cheers for BVO for picking up the problem for me..went Man to see isit exhaust issues but after he start e car told me to ck out the engine 1st and its true..engine issues rather than exhaust issues..hiazz..

Any bros with similar probs pls share yr views..help appreciate

Regards
Barry

The fact that you can hear a louder exhaust note is indicative of a leaking or damaged exhaust. If the exhaust leak is anywhere near the ventilation intake, get it fixed asap. There's a good reason why exhaust gases are discharged near the tail end of most cars.

Worse case scenario - car is stationary, engine is running, odourless carbon monoxide is sucked into the cabin, you pass out. I'm not being alarmist - it has happened before. The case that I'm aware of took place many years ago, in Singapore of all places.

Re: Effects of a leaky exhaust system??

Guys, fix exhaust leaks ASAP. Apart from the the dangers of CO poisoning, the leaks causes an inbalance within your exhaust and this reduces overall flow rates due to exhaust pulses not helping the intake charge to flow into the combustion chamber.

Make sure that every exhaust system has some sort of flexible joint to pipe to take the strain off welds and mounts.

cheers
