Center Console - Leather Wrapping?

This is probably the lousiest BMW part in my E90.

This is how it looks after 1.5 yrs when my car hardly fetch rear passengers. Paint seems melted with sticky rubber-like material...shit!

So, i bought a 2nd piece to replace this as this was no very exp. Now that the 2nd piece is becoming sticky starting to show scratches even with light touches.

So, having 2 pieces of the damn lousy part...now i am looking for ways to do this once and for all.

Is it possible to wrap this thing in leather (this thing is curvy..etc..)? since leather is pretty thick (even if they manage to wrap) to be installed properly into the center console joints which might create a problem.

Pls advise if anyone has done it with good result and where to do it. I would like the wrap the center console part below the handbrake area which is another common peeling problem.

Or i should send it for spray painting?

Here's a pic.

Re: Center Console - Leather Wrapping?

talk to mr lee last nite, it seems this part is no way to be wrapped in any material be it leather or PVC. the only solution is to repaint it.

anyone can recommend a place who can do wrapping for this part in leather/ pvc?

Re: Center Console - Leather Wrapping?

today tried rub off that rubber feel surface (peeling off anyway) with turpentine and cloth. After the layer came out, what's underneath isn't so bad. Just don't have the rubber feel anymore, which is fine.

But I don't stop there, found that Tamiya Semi-gloss comes quite close to the original paint, just don't have the soft feel, and only S$9.00 If your interior is black.

My car jet black, whether exterior or interior DIY touch up it is very easy.

The initial plan is to buy that soft paint from USA. But that kit needs a airbursh to work. I have compressor but to learn adjusting that airbrush (Price range from 70 ~ 300 depending on quality) and mix resin + solvent + hardener needs experimenting. Looks like more than likely I'll ruin it. Too difficult for me.

So finally, to get the best possible result with minimal learning curve and money, I went to Tamiya buy that semi gloss black. Spray can packaging, very easy. One more way is to get the gloss black, then one more layer of texture, but that means 2 bottles, haven't experimented with that.

Make sure you tape up parts not to be sprayed and clean it properly before spray (very critical), 3 thin layers will do. I used turpentine(can get from homefix, about 7 dollars big bottle...) to remove the old paint and same time clean the surface properly.

It look pretty close to original but without that rubber feel, and colour wise is 90% there. Most importantly, took me short time and less than 10 dollars.

Do search at other forums for step by step dismantling tips like this one:5 Series Forums under DIY section.

But whether you are a careful person, to pull off all these jobs, you should judge, or else....prepare to pay to learn by making mistakes.
