While BMW Singapore was having fun hosting the new 3 Series Performance Academy, a small group of us were whisked away to participate in a 5 series drive in The Land of Smiles. With a select range of powerplants available on test, the drive would take us from the Capital of Bangkok, up north to the National Park area of Khao Yai with a full day of activites planned out for us at the local race track, Bonanza Circuit. But before we get started, a big thanks to BMW Asia for inviting me along for the ride.

Our trusted steed for the journey up was the petrol-sipping 4-cylinder turbo-charged, 520i. Of course, not just any 520i, we had the awesome Touring. To those of you who read this blog, you’d probably know i have a thing for them wagons.
P1140154.jpg

All the space and all the grace. I reckon the touring actually looks better then the sedan, although i’m sure many might disagree with me.
P1140167.jpg

Our first stop was at PTT, a Thai state-owned SET-listed oil and gas company.

After a short briefing, it was time to kick off the event.

Our tanks were topped up with the good stuff and sealed.
P1140163.jpg

Gotta get myself a set of those blinky lights.

Any reservations or fears we had about Thailand’s infamous traffic jams evaporated away the moment we saw the police escort. What? Traffic?

P1140190.jpg

First rest stop provided relief for those with weak bladders.
P1140186.jpg

It also provided insight into a seperate toilet. That number “20″ there, represents the bahts needed to utilize the restrooms, but the bahts you pay for the clean toilets also go to helping a charity for children. Win-win both ways.
DSC_5351.jpg

The rest of the journey up was pretty straightforward, allowing the photographers take some nice rolling shots.

The Smokehouse, an interesting lunchstop with some fantastic food. Do give the place a visit if you are ever in the area. If you closed one eye and imagined the sun wasn’t cooking your skin, you might just think you were somewhere in Europe. The Toyota Hiace there won’t help with the illusion though.

Just sharing some fine grub.

P1140220.jpg

Lovely interior.
P1140226.jpg

I tried to search for this later on in my trip, no joy.
P1140227.jpg

Our awesome escorts. Yes, that’s a BMW police bike. Like a boss.
P1140238.jpg

A short drive after lunch brought us up to Bonanza Circuit. Pictures don’t lie, but what they don’t show you is just how hot it was outside.

These fine gentlemen were our instructors of the day.

Meant to give us an insight into the variants of the new 5-Series range, we had at our disposal, the new charged 4-cylindered petrol and diesel cars, a slightly older 6-cylinder NA 523i, and the most powerful of the 4-pots, the 528i. Each with similar underpinnings but unique in their own ways.
P1140243.jpg

A series of stations were set up to showcase the new cars’ handling and power characteristics. And although bordering on sounding serious, it was in actual fact, chances for us to just take the cars our for a joyful, controlled hoon.
DSC_4253.jpg

The emergency lane change station brought our the cars’ fine balance. With everyone piling on the speed after each run, it was also the stage for “cone-killing”.

Cones were harmed in the course of the event.

The slaloms highlighted the differences between cars equipped with and without Active Steering. With a vast array of trick sensors and computer controlled wizardry, it was no wonder the Active Steering equipped car was much easier to control and maneuver about.

The final station of the day, was a drag race between the new 4-Cylindered 520i and the slightly older Inline-6 523i. The winner gets a prize. *Hint Hint*
P1140278.jpg

Just to silence the critics, the smaller engined 520i trounced the 523i pretty much each and every time.
DSC_4662.jpg

P1140299.jpg

As an added bonus, after the drag races, we were given some time to go round the circuit in the various cars, guided by our instructors. Personal impressions between the 520i and 520d? It’s a tough call, and although the 0-60 times might be pretty close, i’d give the diesel powered car the slight edge with just that bit more feel of immediacy when you put your foot down. Points also go to the diesel for being more frugal with the expensive combustible liquids.

DSC_5872.jpg

DSC_6016.jpg

Unfortunately, we were given strict orders to leave the traction control on, as the tight circuit provided no leeway for errors.
DSC_6055.jpg

At the end of the day, EVERYONE had a great time.
P1140307.jpg

Bags loaded up with space to spare.
P1140300.jpg

With the sun going down, it was time to leave the track after a fine day of tire torturing.
P1140315.jpg

P1140310.jpg

A beautiful sunset, but the Muthi Maya resort that lay ahead, was even more lovely.
P1140349.jpg

P1140356.jpg

The event continued into the night as prizes were given out for quizzes and of course the fastest drivers of the day.

With much gratitude and kudos to the Playstation Gran Turismo team, i managed to edge out everyone over the entire event to clinch the fastest set time of the entire event. I guess all those late nights in front of the telly finally paid off in the form of a 8GB thumbdrive shaped like a BMW key.
P1140388.jpg

P1140389.jpg

P1140391.jpg

Soon after, morning came again and it was time to head back into Bangkok.
P1140393.jpg

We swapped over to the diesel 5 and it was time to hit the B-roads on the way out!
P1140403.jpg

P1140407.jpg

Great fun if you’re the driver, less fun when you’re the passenger. Not because of motion-sickness, but because you’d be secretly wishing you were the one behind the wheel. As i was at the helm the day before, it was my compatriot’s turn to pilot the car. Envious i was.
P1140413.jpg

Once at our final rest stop before Bangkok, i swapped cars as i continued my journey in Thailand for another day while the rest of the Singapore team headed straight to the airport for their flight home. Once again, thank you BMW Asia for the invite and thank you BMW Thailand for the wonderful hospitality. To finish off, here’s a video of the event.

Re: BMW-SG goes to Thailand. BMW 5 Series Drive Experience.

Press release as follows:

The new BMW 5 Series
with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology:
Greater efficiency and enhanced driving pleasure.

Bangkok.

BMW Asia today demonstrates that both fuel efficiency and sheer driving pleasure can co-exist, thanks to the new range of four-cylinder engine 2.0-liter variants powered by the BMW TwinPower Turbo technology that is available on the BMW 520i, BMW 528i and BMW 525d.

Hosted in Thailand, the two-day drive event has been tailored to showcase the abilities of the BMW 5 Series through a series of drive activities, which includes normal-road driving from Bangkok to the Khao Yai National Park. The route plan has been designed to showcase the BMW 5 Series’ features, luxury and comfort in combination with its best-in-class fuel efficiency and dynamic performance, especially when it is unleashed on the winding mountain roads of the Khao Yai National Park. Meanwhile, the track activity at the Bonanza Circuit Khao Yai serves to demonstrate the enhanced power of the new four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, which work in perfect harmony with innovative chassis engineering to deliver outstanding driving agility and ride comfort.

“The BMW 5 Series is a worldwide success. Apart from winning a host of awards and comparison tests, the demand for it in car markets across the world and in Singapore is also steadily growing. In fact, the BMW 5 Series was the most popular BMW car model in Singapore in 2011 and continues to be popular to date for the first quarter of 2012,” said Mr Neil Fiorentinos, Managing Director of BMW Group Asia.

“Driven by our Efficient Dynamics philosophy, technology such as the BMW TwinPower Turbo engines has enabled the new BMW 5 Series model range with a higher level of fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions while enhancing the sheer driving pleasure that it is already capable of”.
BMW 520i and BMW 528i

Four-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
With the launch of a new generation of four-cylinder engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the BMW 5 Series engines for the upper mid-range market now lead the way on efficiency and sporty power delivery in the petrol segment too. This world-exclusive technology equips the two 2.0-litre engines with twin-scroll turbo-charging, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. This combination of features is inspired by the technology package used on the multi-award-winning 306 hp six-cylinder in-line BMW TwinPower Turbo engine of the BMW 535i.

Now BMW has adapted this highly efficient performance-boosting technology for their four-cylinder engines as well. The system, which delivers the exhaust gases from each pair of cylinders to the turbine via two separate channels, both in the exhaust manifold and in the turbocharger itself, provides more responsive performance. The fuel supply is precisely metered by the direct-injection system with solenoid injectors, while the latest version of the VALVETRONIC system provides even more precise air mass control and, in combination with Double-Vanos variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing, optimises both efficiency and response.

As fitted in the new BMW 520i, the four-cylinder engine develops maximum power of 184 hp at 5,000 – 6,250 rpm and peak torque of 270 Newton metres, which is available between 1,250 and 4,500 rpm. Instantaneous power response helps the BMW 520i Sedan with eight-speed automatic gearbox perform the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds. Simultaneous efficiency improvement is reflected in average fuel consumption (as per EU test cycle) of 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers and average CO2 emissions of 149 grams per kilometer.

In the new BMW 528i, with modified turbo-charging and injection technology, the four-cylinder engine develops maximum power of 245 hp at 5,000 through 6,500 rpm, and peak torque of 350 Newton meters, which is available between 1,250 and 4,800 rpm. Transmitting its power through the eight-speed automatic gearbox, the BMW 528i accomplishes the 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds and has a top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). The BMW 528i Sedan achieves average fuel consumption of 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers in the EU test cycle, and average CO2 emissions of 152 grams per kilometer.
BMW 525d: More power, greater efficiency.

Four-cylinder 2.0-liter BMW Advanced Diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
The new four-cylinder 2.0-liter BMW Advanced Diesel engine in the BMW 525d, which replaces the inline six-cylinder 3.0-liter power unit, will bring further improvements in power, and further reductions in fuel consumption – in line with the two-fold goal of BMW EfficientDynamics.

The BMW 525d Sedan’s new four-cylinder 2.0-liter BMW Advanced Diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology features the 2.0-liter all-aluminium unit, Variable Twin Turbo two-stage turbo-charging and common-rail diesel injection with piezoelectric injectors. The new power unit is not only significantly lighter than its former inline six-cylinder unit but also, thanks to the VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine) technology of the small turbocharger, is capable of delivering instantaneous response. The small turbocharger comes on stream at low engine speeds, while the contribution from the larger turbocharger varies in precise response to throttle requirements.

The new BMW 525d offers 13 hp power increase over the previous model, developing 218 hp at 4 ,400 rpm and the flat maximum torque of 450 Nm between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. Transmitting its power through the eight-speed Sports Automatic gearbox, the BMW 525d Sedan offers extra agility and sprinting power, which is reflected in the 0-100 km/h acceleration times, which now stand at 7.0 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker. Average fuel consumption (as per EU test cycle is 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers (27% improvement). The corresponding CO2 emissions are 126 grams per kilometer (27% improvement).

Driving Experience Control and Auto Start-Stop function including ECO PRO mode set new standards of efficiency.
A Driving Experience Control switch has also been fitted as standard on the BMW 520i, BMW 528i and BMW 525d. This rocker switch on the centre console allows the driver to customize accelerator response characteristics, engine response, the power steering characteristics, the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) thresholds and, on automatic models, the shift characteristics of the transmission. Drivers can choose between “COMFORT”, “SPORT” or “SPORT+” modes.

The BMW 5 Series also features the ECO PRO mode, which supports a relaxed, extra-fuel-efficient, low-rpm driving style, suitable for long-distant cruise. At the same time, ECO PRO mode also programs electrically powered convenience functions like the heated seats and exterior
mirrors and the air conditioning to operate at optimum efficiency. A special display in the instrument cluster lets the driver know by how much the driving range is being extended when using ECO PRO mode.

Auto Start-Stop, which now comes standard on the BMW 5 Series models, makes another big contribution to efficiency by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle is stopped in a traffic queue or while waiting for the traffic lights to switch.

Enhanced safety, comfort and infotainment with new BMW ConnectedDrive functions.
The BMW 5 Series leads its segment in another important area too: active and passive safety. Euro NCAP, US NCAP and the Australasian NCAP are among the crash tests in which the 5 Series Sedan achieved the maximum rating of five stars.

The standard Comfort Access system has been upgraded with a new function – the contactless boot lid opener, which provides increased convenience when loading the luggage compartment. This innovative function allows drivers to open the boot lid automatically simply by moving their foot under the rear apron.

Another innovative system that improves driver concentration, and ultimately safety, is the optional BMW Head-Up-Display (standard on BMW 535i and BMW 550i). This system projects relevant information onto the windscreen directly in the driver’s line of sight. The BMW 5 Series Sedans are now available with the new-generation version of the BMW Head-Up Display, which for the first time offers full-colour display of symbols and graphics, making road signs, etc, look even more realistic. The functionality of the optional BMW Night Vision system with person recognition has now been extended to include an acute warning comprising visual and audible signals.
