Aircon Smell

Morning bros,

Couldn't find a thread on the above topic so decided to start a new one :juggle:

Can any bro advise how to resolve this 'stinky' issue? For my previous ride, what I tried doing was to switch on the aircon full-blast for 10 mins or so, at the highest temp. After doing it a couple of times, it seemed to have worked and at least for a good while, the smell went away. Apparently the higher temp 'dried' the mould and did the job.

However I tried doing this for my E60 and it didn't do any magic

So have to seek advice from the other beemer owners. Any workshop to solve this issue? Cost?

Many thanks and enjoy the rest of the week!

Cheers!

Re: Aircon Smell

Actually u shd try searching harder cos its been discussed many times..but its a nagging issue.

All the tried and tested methods u read and hear about are good for short term fixes but it comes back again in a few months...thus a more "permanent" solution is required..permanent meaning at least 1yr-1.5yrs...

Go to any good workshop and try to do Aircon flush and chemical cleaning. I used Liqui Moly.. damn good and lasted me more than 1.5yrs and still going strong even to the day I sold off my car.

Re: Aircon Smell

was speaking to Munich Auto's boss yesterday.... was asking him if he knows anything about the bad aircon smell esp for F10s... my mom drives one and I always hear her complain about it.

MA's boss said they have parts / things to install on the car to help alleviate the smell.... perhaps you can give MA a call.

I am unsure about pricing, and unsure if it would work for e60....

cheers.....

Re: Aircon Smell

Hi just to share my experience on my previous ride e36. I am working in a marine environment and use to come in contact with solvent and chemical. I could smell whenever I sw the ac. I changed the cabin air filter filter and it improve. I tried charging at least once a year. In fact I am changing it tmr on my e60. Cost about 70 sgd. try it no harm

The above is the hardcore one if ur aircon is really damn smelly..

but a less hardcore one I tried was

Klima Fresh - Air Conditioning Treatments by Liqui Moly

Try this 1st, cheap also...altho not as permanent

Thanks MW bro, this will be useful for regular preventive maintenance. Procedure does not too complicated too. Any advice where to get it from? Order online or can get locally?

I did mine at Euro Auto at AMK Autopoint #02-?? forgot which unit.. They have a wide range of Liqui Moly products. Did it in 15mins and less than $100 I think... they just on ur car engine and aircon, put the product at the driver's side footwell and release the fumes and let it circulate for about 10mins. The bottle empties itself in abt 5mins I think.

After tat nice smell liao for at least 6 mths

Re: Aircon Smell

I see! thanks for the info again! Seems like it's a pretty straight forward DIY application. Will see what's the damage if get online.

Cheers!

Re: Aircon Smell

Yep. can DIY..and save a few 10s of bux...

Only thing is DIY, if anything not right, u got yourself to blame.

Pay workshop to do, anything u can blast them there and then..

But I think this is a small DIY job so can do it yourself and try...good stuff

The other hardcore one u NEED a workshop

Re: Aircon Smell

if u diy, rem to put a cloth underneath the spray can cuz it seems that it gets rather wet around. And please check often to see it doesnt topple over and start to spray onto the carpet or panels or doors.... pretty easy to diy. Did it once but seems like i didnt get it right and the smell didnt really go away entirely....

Re: Aircon Smell

I had the same problem with my E60. To add to it, there was a whirling sound only when the car was in motion encountering G forces.
Could not figure it out so I took it to Moto-Aire after a frustrating day at TWM. They opened up the middle dashboard aircon compartment and realised that there was a small pool of putrid foul smelling water with jelly like substance in there. We knew then that when the car encounters any G forces, the water just below would get into the blower fan and make the whirling sound (but it was not enough for the aircond to spit the water out the vents). The cause of this mainly was due to the drain pipes for the aircond (water) being blocked. So it was unblocked with an air pressure gun, and all the glunk / water was cleaned up. Surprisingly, the aircond coils were in very good shape and didn't need any maintenance. I decided to replace the fan blower cuz it was in a foul state too - rusty and the plastic was badly stained with god only knows. It's been over 18 months now and my aircond is still fresh and problem free and I've not done any maintenance to it since. Hope this helps.

Re: Aircon Smell

my e60 also smells bad during first 30secs.
went to moto-aire and they are actually quite helpful.
i wanted to clean the evaporator inside the centre dashboard (1 day work and S$700) but he say no need... let him check first.
ok... sounds like a good idea.

the boss (i think), ask me to throw away my only car freshener as they actually make the situation worse, because they mask the smell but does not remove.
ok... sounds reasonable.

next his mechanic check below the centre dashboard for drain blockage and looks fine.
he spray some smell removal inside vehicle including the boot.
told me to turn the temp setting lower to around 18 so that the flap will remain closed to avoid mixing warm air from heater.
ok... sounds fair.

he then tell me to test it out for a week or so and did not charge me anything.
ok... sounds gentleman

wat i found out myself is turn the fan speed low. so you will not smell it so much or easily. let the temp go down for a minute to cool the internal.
by doing this, the smell will go away when it cools, then you increase the fan speed to your desired.

wahaha bro! Exactly what I experienced today when I went to him at about 1245pm..... told me to buang the air freshener.... when I told him it should not be the air freshener, he said:

"When u have this freshener in the car, and and parked the car under the sun, the smell will get ito the aircon vent and this 'sour smell' will appear.... just imagine u have a packet of chicken rice in the car, and under the sun...... isn't it smelly too???" Duhhhhhh....... I was speechless and decided to just try it out :p

He also didn't charge me after testing the gas level and coolness.... cos he said everything fine.... hope so lor...... keke :juggle:

Hi bro,

So what's the outcome after removing the air fresher? I removed it and the smell seems to have gone away.... well, at least it became less noticeable after that :)
