Why CAI ?

Forgive me for being ignorant.

There is so much talk about CAI mods but I believe that the BMW's air filter housing intake hose is already taking air from outside the engine compartment. So why the need for additional CAI mods?

2. increased flow rate
3. better ram air effect

by plugging in an aftermarket scantool into your OBDII port, many of us have independently seen an increase of airflow, and a decrease of intake air temp from CAI mods, with various degrees of improvements from different brands of CAI or aftermarket filters.

Thanks. I take it that the increased flow and ram effect would help only in the high rev range

I am surfing for various brands of air intake. Any review on the following brands?

Benfer
Carbonio
ECIS
K&N 63 Series

Benfer and Carbonio are mostly the same snorkel design. My major concern for not getting them was getting hydrolock in heavy rains etc etc
If you decide on the Benfer, look on eBay generally they go for $299 new there.
I decided on the Conforti intake which is like the ECIS and the K&N intake, No regrets so far *Touchwood*
Another option would be the Simota Gruppe M Reps.

Ordered Gruppe M from him. Just wondering why there is such a huge price variance. Brand premium and design obviously contributed to it. But surely effectiveness on airflow will be different owing to the design and installation?

I don't think the UUC CAI is out yet just spoke to Rob@UUC he mentioned it might be out in 1 few weeks time and that there are 3 different types of intakes being offered. 2 of them don't have the charateristic whistle of CAIs while 1 will be like the ecis.
