Re: why 335 and not 330TT ?
I think everyone who buys a 335i is a poseur.
(sorry kenn, couldnt resist)
The model numbering is confusing, but it makes sense from a marketing standpoint. The 323 and 325 share the same engine capacity - the only difference is the internals. A move to capture more of a market share? Hey, I am buying a 2.5L engined car - but I cannot afford the costlier 325 variant so I will go for the 323. Similarly for the 330 (328, 233hp in the US).
At times, the power needs to be reduced to accomodate environmental laws so the 323 kind of engines are born. However, there are markets where both the 323 and 325 can be sold so why not? More product differentiation - and to the consumer (psychologically) more choice. However, there are also times when the same Engine outputs different amounts of power depending on the year of manufacture e.g. the 3.0 I-6 (the E90 version) outputs 258, 265 and 272 bhp depending on when it was made and which car it is in. Of course, if you study the individual model designations, you will discover each is a different engine. The 258 and 265 are N52 (258 was in the 330i and the 265 was in the 630i and the Z4 3.0) and the current 3.0 I-6 sold in Europe as 330i outputs 272hp. Confusion - yes, but all due to progress, not marketing.
The 335i is not called the 330TT as that would suggest the same engine as the 330 (N52/53 vs N54). I think (according to TopGear if I remember correctly) the engineers in Munchausen wanted to call it the 330top or something similar, but this was shot down by the marketing department.
But, I still maintain - everyone who buys a 335i (esp. the conv. is a poseur)
Jokes apart - I actually agree with Centu - Kenn, dont take offense on this because I know some people personally who's only criterion of buying a car is - which one will make people think I am posh etc.
Buyers of technologically advanced cars like the 335i can be classified into three types
1. The car afficioados: like kenn, elmariachi etc. who know what the engine is, what it is capable of and buy the car for its sweet handling, the engine and the ride. Of course the looks come into the picture somewhat
2. The poseurs: people who will buy cars solely based on how they look and how posh they project the person to be. I know someone who bought a 335i convertible just because he thought it looks cool and the 335i is the top of the range in the 3 series.
3. The idiots: who dont know much about cars, but will pile into the 335i because joe next door has it and the bloke at the pub reckons it is good... and ooh - it has turbos
just my tuppence...
