Whining when Full lock

Hi all,

My E90 currently 3 months old have the whining sound whenever I go full lock on my steering wheel. It has been like this since the first day I got my car. Previously my experience was that when the power steering fluid is low then will have whining noise when turning the steering. Now I am thinking whether it was insufficiently filled from the factory or is this a prevalent issue on E90s?

Re: Whining when Full lock

Definitely a prob...go bang table at PML...

Ok shall feedback this issue to them during my first service. 6000km more to go ya. Also my engine head gasket area is starting to leak some oil...hmmm 3 months old car only and have such problems already....shitto.

Re: Whining when Full lock

delrosa, considering that you changed your FD2 for quite a simple reason, I must ask - do you regret changing to a BMW now?

Your problems are serious. A power steering issue, a bloody gasket oil leak ... my god.

Really, if you wanted perfect, your best chance would be the Lexus.

Hmmm almost wanted to get the IS250 but then the car has not much character. Its just like getting a watch, a Casio Digital watch would do the job of showing the time accurately for less than a hundred bucks and a Piaget that cost 50 to 100 grand that does perfectly the same thing. But the brand for all makes the wearer feel better and feels good about himself or herself.

As for why I changed my FD 2 to 320i, I didnt expect so much on reliability though hahaha this car is just about making myself feel good kekekeke. Im more of a poseur as I mentioned earlier hehehe. So problems like this are considered pretty minor as long as the car does not breakdown on me that often, Im fine with it cos BMW is not a car that has the reliability of Jap makes like a Lexus.:)

Hi Bro,

Thanks for your advise! Will check it out! Thanks so much :)

Re: Whining when Full lock

could it be tire noise. meaning when full lock, your tire is rubbing against rubbery tarmac inside the carpark. If isn't, I don't think you should wait till another 6000KM more. send straight to PML.

Oh this problem has been prevalent even on my stock rims and tyres so I guess I better wait till my service is due and send it in to PML for a checkup. :)

Re: Whining when Full lock

oops... its not air-con belt
but the power steering belt! though it might not be the same as the E36 power steering ones...

let us know after u fixed it...

Hi Bro,

did you manage to rectify this steering sound when in full lock...mine has it...both ways.....full left lock and full right lock.... :(

thanks.

Re: Whining when Full lock

Hi all,

Juz to share, my 2007 E90 had this sound too when the steering turns to full lock left and right.. no negative issues till date...

lets see wat PML will come up with the diagnostic.....

cheers

Re: Whining when Full lock

it should be the power steering sound ... no issue
the sound is heard in full lock during parking or going up/down hdb mscp

Re: Whining when Full lock

that is a common sound. PML will tell you it is normal. I tested on a few E90s and confirm that as well.

but going up and down hdb mscp, no sound leh

Re: Whining when Full lock

Hi Bro,

Agreed, dropped by PML...the guy checked...and said it was normal...don't believe that he even he popped and checked under the hood :(

could it be due to the power steering oil level? planning to get it checked at BVO

Thanks

+1 .......... pop the bonnet and check the level. Top it up and check for leaks - coloured stains.......

Hi Red_Bean_Bun
Thanks for the pointers. no leaks or stains.

Went in and got it resolved, they flushed and replaced the power steering oil....and gradually the noise disappeared.

monitoring the condition.

Regards.

There maybe air pockets in the Power Steering Pump like this article:

How to Remove Air From Power Steering
by HowStuffWorks.com Contributors

If steering your car becoming noisier and more difficult, it may be a problem with your power steering [source: 2carpros]. The problem may simply be an air pocket that's trapped in the power steering pump. The power steering pump operates by hydraulics and anything that operates by hydraulics can easily be affected if air gets into the system. Any air that gets into the power-steering system will be compressed by the pump and will result in noise and difficulty steering [source: Bumbeck].
Here's how to remove the air from your power-steering pump.

  1. Make sure the engine is off and cool.
  2. Remove the power steering reservoir cap and check the power steering fluid level.
  3. Add as much fluid as needed to fill it up.
  4. Replace the cap.
  5. Locate the power steering bleed valve on the steering box. If you have difficulty finding it, just follow the high pressure line from the power steering pump to the other end, which will be in the power steering box.
  6. Push a hose on the end of the bleeding valve. The hose should be long enough to reach outside the front of the car.
  7. Place a drain pan on the floor in front of the car and place the other end of the hose into it.
  8. Turn on the engine.
  9. Loosen the bleed valve slightly.
  10. Turn the steering wheel to the right and left as much as you can.
  11. Shut the engine.
  12. Close the bleed valve.
  13. Add power steering fluid to the reservoir until it's full.
  14. Check the fluid that came out into the drain pan. If you notice air bubbles, repeat the procedure.
  15. You must repeat the procedure until the fluid in the pan is bubble free. When there are no bubbles in the fluid you know the system is bled [source: Bumbeck].
