Which fuel grade to use?

Hi All,

Can anyone here advise if it's good or bad to use Shell 95 for my E60? Currently using mainly 98, V power when they have it at promo prices

thanks!

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

just use 98 la...there is a difference....imo..not worth the switch...i only use vpower...

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

i only use Vpower, I feel immediate different if switch anything below 98.

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

for an E60...follow your manufacturer's advice use 97 and above la...

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

98 most of the time.. vpower if i get vouchers.. or when coming back via 2nd link..

don't know if it's psychological or real, but i can feel the lack of oomph without minimum 98

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

On my 320i, I feel significant difference when switch from V power to Shell 98. The Msian Vpower is not the same as our SG Vpower. If not wrong, its lower octane, maybe 97 or 95 but still got additives to burn faster.

I havent tried 98 on my 335i since day-1. Always pump Vpower. Anyone did?

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

actually, for european cars better use RON98. for turbo cars which have been tuned above stock, better use RON98 with 'rocket-juice' or octane booster.
ya. . . . ya . . . . yaya .....i know its expensive to put in octane booster but, if tuned to go above the stock output, the safety anti-knock or pinging margin would negate that costs.

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

Thanks for the input guys. My company gave me a fuel card, but can only use 95.
Hopefully they will allow me to pump 98 if I ask nicely.
Funny thing is, I call PML and the SA says that using 95 is ok, will just experience lag.
I'll have to agree with you guys, 98 is the lowest I'd go.

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

how song can u get in a car? go home and pump la

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

I cheapo..... Singapore I use 95. In Boleh Land, I look for the best available either Shell V-power or Mobil F1, since less than half price of Singapore's 95

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

Did an experiment recently, using 98 the fuel consumption is 8.6 l/ 100 km whilst using 95 it is 9.2 l/ 100 km, can't explain why

Its the efficiency of the combustion, I believe. With higher octane, the combustion is more complete and if the additive in the 98 is true.... it aids in the cleaning of your chamber.... thus result in the power gain with lighter accelarator's footing; citrus paribus

Its efficiency with a higher price to pay

My 2 cents worth

Cheers

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

On page 223 of the 335i LCI manual it says "BMW recommends using premium grade petrol with 95RON..."
Wouldn't they recommend 98 RON if it runs better/with more power on 98?
Is it tuned for 95 or will it auto tune to take advantage of 98?

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

IMO, minimum RON 98 should be the way to go to feel the ultimate driving of a Beemer.

:laughlik:

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

Went to M'sia recently. Pumped V-power 97 and felt similar to V-power in SG (98). But when returning via 2nd Link, chanced upon V-power Racing at the Shell station just before the M'sia Check Point (apparently not all Shell stations have Racing). Pumped almost a full tank of Racing (still got about 20% remaining in tank with V-power 97 then) and can feel the difference. Car is more torquey and willing to go with a light press on the accelerator. Felt more torque than V-power 98 here but was not sure until I refilled the tank with V-power 98 last week. Racing is definitely more torquey.

Is Racing RON100? Or is it due to Italian tune-up (running up and down NSH at high speed)? How come SG does not have Racing?

How does one get less than 10 l / 100km? I usually pump 95 ron and averaging abt 12 l / 100km

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

Your driving habits also factor in ya..!

Re: Which fuel grade to use?

And also the percentage of highway and city driving that is the factor to consider.
