HI Guys,

with the launch of the new 3 series early next year, based on your experience, when will the next M3 be launched?

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

launch in 2012 frankfurt motor show possible then retail thereafter

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

sept 2012 is not near. as usual by the time the authorized dealer brings it, itll b 2013 already

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

I suppose the bigger question is whether newer means better - that will be the bigger question.

I prefer an NA V8 or a turbocharged 6-potter (whether inline 6 or V6) anytime (yes, despite having less torque/hp).

I actually have high hopes for the next M3. Unlike the F10 M5, it does seem like they are finally starting to loose some weight if the F30 is any indication. Would be a real blast if the new M3 is at least 50kg lighter but with increased torque from those turbos. Reviewers are already commenting that the F30 328i has inertia absent from the equation. That sounds very encouraging :)

The new M3 will be a 3.4L newly designed V6. Possible to go up to 3.6L but not firm at this stage.
Not sure if its twin or tri turbos but I know weight will definitely be down from what the E92 is currently. They have acquired a CF company in US to do all the CF work now. So expect more of the BMW lineups, particularly the higher end ones, to have extensive use of CF.

The only one thing I hope is that the V6 sounds good though I think it wont be nearly as good as the S65B40 (4.0L) or S65B44A. (4.4L) . FI cars tend to have what I term as "noise". And its generic. With every M car to date, particularly M3s, they had a unique sound to it. Don't know how it will be for the new M3's.

The new M3 is apparently going to be called the F80 M3!

Report: F80 M3 Is the New BMW M3 / M4 -- Sedan Comes First in 2013! - BMW 3-Series Forum (F30 / F32) | F30POST

A turbocharged engine will never sound as good as NA, and throttle response will not be as good. Also, the rev limit will be lowered.

Of course, there will be a huge torque wave you can ride on, and tuning potential is HUGE.

There are tradeoffs, but having had TCed cars previously, I am still in love with the NA V8s.

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

I bought an M3 hoping that it will be a future classic. E90/92/93 M3 are the last of the naturally aspirated V8 M cars. Having had a JDM turbo monster before, my preference is still NA. I will try to avoid turbocharged cars as long as I can because eventually all cars in the future will be using forced inductions for emissions reasons, so there is no rush for me to get another one. I hope never to sell the M3, if space permits, and also get a thunderous 6.2L AMG to keep for posterity. The next M3 will undoubtably be faster but it will never be better. Nobody keeps a E30 M3 or a Ferrari Daytona because it is faster than what can be had now. It's about cars that were the epitome of engineering in their class, benchmark for the segment and defined the era.

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

2013 is not far considering they will start collecting deposits 6 months in advance!

i think they will endeavour to make the M3 better. Like the M5, some were skeptical of it being TC but i guess people get used to accepting the benefits of advancement in technology. Look at the e46 M3. Its such a lovely car but today, it has lost its shine versus the E92. and the e60 M5, is another example.

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

Turbo cars used to suffer from huge lag, but look at the turbo engined cars from BMW lately. BMW has filed for a patent for an electric tri turbo setup with an electric turbo helping to generate boost before the other 2 conventional twin scroll turbos spool up to speed. If this materializes, i think it would be pretty ground breaking and would go a very long way in eliminating lag.

NA cars while boasting better throttle response, nevertheless, suffers from what one forumer dubbed as "rpm lag." The rev might pick up instantly at the prod of my foot, but real progress doesn't happen much later until the rev hits higher band. For me, that equates to a form of lag. To me, lag is measured against progress, not just simply response. It's something i always find lacking since the days of my E46 330Ci. I will happily trade off a thousand rpm for more torque. Sound, on the other hand, need not suffer as a result of going FI. They will never sound the same, but doesn't necessarily mean it will be worst, just different. I am sure the new M3 will get a voice deserving of its cult status.

I dare not even think that carbon technology will make its way into the new M3. BMW is quite a cheap skate when it comes to weight loss management. I think those advanced CF technology will be reserved for the i series cars. I have no issue with BMW making a V6. Lop 2 cylinders off the M5 block and slap on a 3rd electric turbo and we are good to go :)

yes in fact all BMs sounds the same to me. I drove an E21, E36 & now E90 & they all have that unique whirring sound no other car has... hmm

Where got same??? The M54 in my E46 330Ci sounded very differently from my wife's previous 130i though the latter is a development of the former. The addition of valvetronic has somewhat ruined the induction note with the valvetronic motor whine. The S65 in the E9x M3 also sounds very differently from the S54 esp the the exhaust note.

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

If the reduce the engine size from the current V8 to 3.4 or 3.6 V6, the engine weight saving will be quite substantial already.

Re: When will the new M3 be out?

I don't think weight reduction comes from reduced cylinders. The current M3 V8 is lighter than the previous M3 I6 engine. With the new force induction engine, you'll have to add weight of turbo and cooling ancillaries.

The interesting part is that the S63TU engine in the new M5 is actually ligher than the outgoing V10. I find that quite hard to believe considering that there is a shit load of cooling radiators and piping involved. The physical dimension of the F10 however, negates any weight saving gained from the powerplant. The DCT for sure is heavier than the SMG II.
