I'm just sharing what I was told by Leong Seng, Kelvin, when I put on those MEs. don't take it is recommend defactor thingy. if you look closely onto your tires wall for the fine prints. most tire had max load psi/kpa and treadwear info.

I've just came back from stamford tire @ bukit batok , I did asked 'Ah Kheong'. He said 40psi is recommended cos my low profile tires. higher psi can prevent wheel dent. but he never say better handling nor better tire wear. afterall, I did drive 38/40 pressure for quite sometime now. nothing bad really. corner is good. high speed is good.

I had DC5 friend who track his car, his on 32/33 when is cold. warms up, 34/36.

anyway I really can't tell much a differences of 36 or 40. my butt just not that sensitive. is your ride you listen, you decide.

DO NOT pump more than 35psi. You will get uneven wear in the centre of the tyre, more road noise, less grip, less front end feel and harsher ride. Never put a different amount in front or rear, always the same. If you are anal, 33psi is optimum.

phil, I had to disagree with you. it shouldn't be one pressure fits all kinda of thoughts. different profiles and sizes contribute to pressure needed for the each set up. I think side wall compound plays a part too.

Guys, go to our local vag forum, search using key words "tyre pressure". There are some interesting discussion there. My own take is that if you pump too low, your sidewall gonna wear out. Pump too high and the centre of the tyres gonna wear out and it is much easier to lose traction.

Why not just follow BMW recommendation, front 220kpa and rear 250kpa.Tyres 225 and 235, 255 and 265 not much different!
For myself a bit kia su, I put 225 front and 255 rear, extra 5 kpa for both.

Ah chu, dont listen to my suggestions, im only an automotive engineer by trade with 25 years experience in show car builds, hot rod and custom car builds, race car and race boat builds and team mechanic experience. I have people waiting on me back home to help them with their engine builds, they only let me touch it. I am also an ex motocross racer, tyre pressure is one of the single most important thing in any form of vehicle. If you put 40psi, your life is at risk, as is those of your family. Go ahead and pump 40.

I understand you had good experience and resume in racing cars and whatever other racing sports. still none of your experience uses low profile like our street used profile. most are on 40/45 tire wall (correct me if I'm wrong). I've little experience with bike too. both my Harley Fat Boy & BMW R1150RT pump 38-40psi on the rear. like i said before, tire pressure is subjective to tire wall, material or compound and load of the vehicle. I've never said 40 is good for anything. just that those are info from a tire shop. all i trying to say is it shouldn't be one single 34psi me the all size will follow. again is your/my car, we put whatever we confident with.

if you read your tire pressure matrix diagram by your door, Rear 255/30/19" on 4pax+luggage load, recommendation for your rear pressure is 310kpa = 44.9psi. go tell BMW engineer that they are crazy. mind you those should be recommendation for run-flat tire spec.

ok, let's back to terry's queries, 20" low profile tire pressure.

I fill mine 270kpa on my rears the station attendant look at me stupid already. But handles real good at the recommended pressures.

Max recommended pressure for full load of people and luggage is still safe. Without those loads you can go slightly higher even. I know people personally that go high side to 44 psi and ever have a problem or uneven wear logging thousands of miles on some pretty bad road too. I go to 40 with no problems. It is true grip is reduced somewhat, but I've never needed a lot of grip on public roads. I like the mileage I get from it. Better in the rain too.

I agree with acupunch that there is no fixed rule and depends on a range of factors. Pressure in itself within the limits stated by manufacturer (tire and car) is fine. You're more likely to blow a tire up from under inflation since you're putting more heat into the tire from tire deformation and increase in patch friction.
