Hi,

I am looking for new 523 owner's recommendations in terms of how to break in the engine (i.e. drive less then 60 km per hour, maybe not required anymore), the recommended period for the first service and which brand and type of engine oil to be used?

Thanks in advance.

hahhaha.. Drive below 60? No la..

Dont cross over 140 and do not rev past 4500rpm. Do this for about 1200-1500KM. After which gradually increse to 5k-6k proportionately over the next 500km. Max you shoud do is about 6200rpm before 2000km. Do not redline untill an oil change which i would recommend. After this, after all your cylinder linings and seals have run in, you may redline but do not do it too often. Most engines including BMW offers best performance after 10,000km where you will feel the engine is much tighter and your FC will drop by quite a bit. BMW engines have a tendency to consume oil if you dont run in properly. This is my method to breaking in the engine and so far it has served me well. I believe the manual state 2000km for break in period.

As for oil, BMW insists on using Castrol and there is nothign u can do abt it. But you can bring BMW approved oils for your oil change. For me, Mobil 1 is good enough. Its proven and especially good in our weather. Oil rating, check your manual. Not very sure. Should be 5W-30 me think.

I contain the rev to 2000rpm for my 5ser and at this rpm, the max speed i travel at is arnd 100km/h
My SE said the run-in is require for the first 2km but i intend to run it till 5km mark.
Consumption is currently at 12ltr or less/100km.

Re: What's the best way to break in 523i

no la...all these running in...very kiasu, imo....the cars r made to run in all countries under all kinds of climates.....the engines r all tuned down about 20% as a rough gauge. not all countries hv efficient service network like us. some of these cars go to far flung latin america even UK for eg. ppl hv to drive 300km to get to a service agents.

besides we kill our cars in 10 yrs! how many of us clock 200,000km or drive 10 yrs? hardly. if anything your gearbox go first...not the engine.

ok thats a more reassuring thought bro hehe, my previous job, I used to clock 60,000km per year so within 3 to 4 years, I will hit 200,000km liao. guess I cant keep my car for long man. Anyway I think should be alright, nowadays engines are made with much tighter tolerances, they do red line testing at the factory and when loading and unloading our cars at the ports, the people have already redline and run in for us hehehehe. :)
