What to look out at 85,000km

Hello everyone, I am new here and would be getting my ride this evening.

Getting 00 318, the 1.9l one. The mileage on it is 85,000.

Very excited about it and understand that this is a coming 5 yr old car and 1 owner.

Anyway, wondering what would I be expecting to service or wear and tear parts that I have to do? Would I run into a hefty bill? If so, how much?

Also any advise for me? This is my fist Bimmer.

I am asking this because I just scrapped my other coupe as it would cost too much to do the gearbox, timing belt, and other wear and tear etc.... although I love my coupe....thought that this unit was a pretty good one.

I have read from the other threads and seems like BMW is on timing chain, when am I expected to change it? Cars that I owned all ran on timing belt.

Other stuffs like brakes? Oil Change...sparkplugs.....?

Please advise.

Thanks !!!

Welcome to the forum, Jerry. My previous ride was a 2000 1.9 318 as well, and it served be well for 70,000 km in 3 years. The last mileage read 112,000 km. Major problems that surfaced after the 80,000 mark include the aircon condenser, radiator ($600 I'd think), window's motor (

Different cars with be quite different even if same make/model at the same age. Rather than ask here, it'll be a better idea to send car to one of the listed workshops here and let me have a once-over. Tell them you just want a list of things that needs to be replaced, with cost estimates, but don't replace first. Such a check should cost you $50 or less.

After you get the list, then you can post here and ask for advice on whether each part should change, is price reasonable, etc etc.

I have not worked out the depre, but as my friend is in the car industry, the depreciation should be about a Japanese make.

Dreamdriver: Understand that I should send to PML for free evaluation. Got such thing? Also they will register me as a Bimeer owner and should have some perks, true?

Re: What to look out at 85,000km

My previous ride was a Peujeot 406 coupe. Depreciation was at $7,500 per year. But needed to change some parts on the gear box, timing belt, brake disc and pads with some others...those are wear and tear I guess, plus insurance for coupe was pretty high, so I decided to change to Bimeer about same depreciation.
Understand from friends that Bimeer has less problems and that the rear wheel drive does not wear out the gear box as much. True?

I don't know about the free evaluation, especially if your car is out of warranty. No harm calling them to ask. But it's good to update them that you're the new owner. They'll send you magazines and inform you about events.

DreamDriver, Thanks really appreciate it. Just one question, you guys have a monthly gathering right? Is it at the Kallang Mcdonalds this Sunday? What time?

Found it on the site liao. Thanks anyway.

It's a 100-point check for $250, I'd think.

Re: What to look out at 85,000km

things that may just spoil between 85k to 100k km (for relatively hard, city driving, on an E46) will be something like:

1) fuel pump
2) alternator
3) windows mechanism
4) cat converters
5) shock absorbers
6) engine/ tranny mounts
7) control arm bushings
8 ) torque converter itself
9) wiper tank pump
10) radiator pump
11) Radiator expansion tank crack
12) Belt crack
13) spark plugs
14) aircon condensor

these are a few of the more common things that has befallen most members here and myself, at this kind of mileage.

Other things that are slightly less common are:
1) brake booster/ ABS
2) DSC module
3) Vanos Module (not applicable to you)
