erm....pls advice... mine is M44 Manual... mods so far

1) Open pod filter with CAI
2) semi flow de-cat Exhaust

no overly expensive mods for me as i intend to drive short term but longing for more power... hehee... Superchip? Obit? ADM air charger? SC kit & Hi-Op cams too expensive liao... HELP!

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

Maybe you can try unichip......... I heard not bad.....

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

Mods, it depends on what you are after.

1. CAI with open port. This will help boost your HP but you sacrifice low end torque though. A compromise is to replace your stock filer with a high flow one but retain the stock air box.

2. Changing cams. This will also boost HP but again kills low end power.

3. SC is expensive but good for power. Alternatively you can save money by getting a 2nd hand SC unit from ebay and custom build a manifold for it.You cna be able to get it below 2K.

4. USe better spark plugs like Brisk LGS. I tried on my M42 engine and it really works.

5. Use good engine oil. The Texas Titanium plus really works for my M42 thus M44 will work as well

6. Exhaust wraps.

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

lol...i agree rims too big... but i like! lol..
but erm seriously, no experts here can advice? SC will cost arm n leg...we looking at 8K incl labour...
cams too exp also... 2K+ for 10bhp... a little silly....
unichip? hw much hp can be reeled out?
silent quoted me $800 for its power tune piggy back... est 21bhp increase... heee... dunno hw true

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

Yield is key. How much could you spend to extract any reasonable gain on the M44B19 (1,9 litre) block?

Recall the various guys trying hard to gain power on the M43B19 block (PFL E46 318 block)..... same issue here. Not much you could extract on a per-dollar spent basis.......

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

sobz...sighz...

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

I know how it feels. I had both the M43B19 and the N42B20 blocks. Felt helpless.......

I don't recommend getting the piggy back now. It should be the last mod after you have done everything else.

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

As for SC, I have mentioned that you can get a 2nd hand SC and custom built a manifold for it. Thats the best way to save money.

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

Having driven m50 e34 I dont find my m44 too underpowered for it leh. In fact the car is so light and agile that I think it the m44 is not bad in this car compared to the other 3-series.

I understand that not all SCs are suitable right? they have different sizes, mounting points etc... what kind of SC do u recommend? but with SC, I also need to have the belts, pulleys, additional injectors, a piggy back for adjustments in fuel curve, change the fuel pump, and lastly a thicker gasket to lower the compression of the engine?

Those Eaton M62/M90 SCs on sale at ebay are good options. The mounting points aren't that critical because you need to custom build a manifold for it. Btw, Turbo units are also good options as well.

If you are running low boost (say ~6psi) you can do keep the rest of the engine stock.

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

Btw, if you are after serious power and is willing to spend the time and money, you can consider dual charging the M44. Replace the internals with forged components and dump in a big Turbo and a roots SC.

Then you have make M5/M6s smell your exhaust and what you taillights disappear.......lol...

Re: what can be done to M44 engine on my Z3?

lol...thanks bro for valuable advice... I would go search for the Eaton chargers and prices... what kind of piggyback or EMS would u suggest to tune the SC with? based that if i'm working on real tight budget
