Need some advise ..

Got a FLE46 318 recently .. I have this problem. After a long drive AND traffic jam.. The water temp slowly goes up, But if normal driving no problem, BUT if i let the car idle for 20 min or more the temp sometime go up slowly too . But if i step on the accerator the meter drop to normal .. Why is it like that ?? There is no leak ..
Any bro can help or know what may go wrong ??

Thanks :)

Re: water temp go up , what wrong ?

Water temp shld not go up after warm up.
look serious to me thou not sure wat ur problem. avoid traffic jam !
got this on my VW golf due to cooling fan wear & tear.
got this on my BMW E36 when coolant pipe leak.
if you go find out early definitely save u more money.
if temp go up never come down, pocket burn big time !

Problem is i dont get to see the water temp go up often, sometime i want to see also cant see. even start let the car idle for quite a while . But when it go up , i step on the gas pedal it will come down to normal already , which mean on the drive it will be normal . only got to have long drive and idling for long time then it will go up .......:juggle: headache ... wanna drive up to Genting also scare scare le ..

Re: water temp go up , what wrong ?

Me not a techie, but a couple of things to look out for:

1) Water pump working properly?
2) Fan control ok? (not sure if the fan for E46 is 1 or 2-speed, and under what conds they kick in)
3) Do a coolant flush (might have airlock somewhere in the system)
4) Gasket failing (indicated by oil in coolant and vice versa)

"BUT if i let the car idle for 20 min or more the temp sometime go up slowly too . But if i step on the accerator the meter drop to normal"

Maybe you can get your mate to perform an experiment like the above, and observe the operation of the fan after the temp starts to climb, and when you rev (and the temp start to fall), and feedback to your workshop.

Good luck dood.

1) I am not sure wether the water pump play the part , not sure wether the fin worn out or not that slow down the water flow.
2) As for the fan , it seem to be only 1 speed , any it seem slow to me compare to the car i have before (all jap car ) , i am thinking if it is the fan ?? Even very hot already also same speed ?? Not powerful one i feel ..
3) I believe i have release the gas in the engine , and coolant and engine oil seem fine ..

Re: water temp go up , what wrong ?

Hi

Hope it's not to late for the reply.

I experience the same problem (exactly the same as yours) .. just resolve it last Friday.

The Problem :
- The electrical connector to the FAN was found faulty ... hence Fan was not working properly

To check :
- While in idle speed of the engine, physically checl whether the Fan is operating.

I get it fix up by removing the connector and having the cable joined to one another directly.

Well , my fan still run , but slowly . Not sure did the fan give any problem. When it is aidling the fan still run ..

Re: water temp go up , what wrong ?

Hi

If not the fan problem, the fastest & cheapest approach is to get your car mechanic to check on the "adjustment cap" located beside the rediator body. I was told by one of my contractor (who also facing the similar problem) that by adjusting the cap will "balance the pressure" of the water ... and the problem solved. There is a "+" sign on the surface of the cap.

Good Luck !

Re: water temp go up , what wrong ?

Hi hi..

The cap with the + sign is just a purge valve to allow any trapped air in the water jacket around the cylinder head to escape. Normally, there may be an air bubble trapped in there if your coolant was flushed by a unknowing mechanic. IMO the 2 most probable faults relate to radiator fan or thermostat.

cheers and good luck

Re: water temp go up , what wrong ?

Well, i had already did the water balance check at the + sign , open up , top up water in the coolant side to balance up thw water level.
Fan working but slow ( i feel) , thermostat should be ok if not i will see the water temp goes up everyday ?

I think i will change the water pump first to see how it goes . my workshop say there is a pin on the water pump, when it the water get too hot the pin fail, which casue the repeller to fail to spin , that slow the water flow , that why temp goes up . Any bro here experience this before ?
