Thanks guys for all the advice. Brought the car in, the nice lady who was attending to it said they detected a slightly deformed door sill and would conduct some water tests to see if that's causing some problems with the door seal.

They didn't give too much problems, but fingers crossed on how they decide to proceed later.

No luck with finding a fix for the synthetic leather bit? I'll just have to hope they don't tell me I have to buy the entire interior door panel to solve that problem....

Seems like this post might have triggered some Bavarian car pride. But I have to say, even though i've encountered some problems with BMWs we've owned, some major some minor, I still love them. In the end, I feel it's a bit of luck on which car you get. Some are damn solid, and others? Make you wonder if maybe the assembly center serves free beer for a couple of hours after lunch...
