Volvo recalls 300 in S'pore

VOLVO is recalling about 300 vehicles in Singapore for an engine software upgrade as a pre-emptive measure against the possibility of the vehicles jerking or stalling at low speeds.

About 11,000 cars of the S40, V50 and C30 models from 2009 onwards are involved in the recall worldwide, following investigations by the Volvo headquarters in Sweden.

Affected customers were informed late last week by a letter sent from local Volvo distributor Wearnes Automotive.

It said recent investigations have identified that the engine revolutions per minute may oscillate at low speed or when idling, which may lead to a risk of personal injury and property damage.

But Wearnes' assistant general manager Sabrina Sng said there have been no reported cases of such incidents actually happening and the recall is more of a precautionary step.

'There is no serious risk of safety and customers can continue driving their cars,' she said

Does this (above bold statement) appear like the jerk we have? Do you think we should band together and approach PML to do a software update since their competitor is doing it?

I am going to write to them and see how they respond.

Re: Volvo recalls 300 in S'pore

Nice to see the local agent being proactive with any likely problem that may occur to their cars unlike PML. It's ridiculous that BMW has officially sent out to all owners with the n54 a schedule to replace their fuel pumps and software in the USA but nothing being done here to acknowledge this recurring problem. In which case, the volvo's problem is a trivial one that affects drivability unlike the one like BMW which affects reliability and safety.

BMW to Conduct Voluntary Emissions and Safety Recalls

* 26.10.2010
* Press Release

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – October 26, 2010... BMW of North America has notified the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of its intent to conduct a voluntary recall of some model year 2007-2010 BMWs equipped with twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engines, all of which feature BMW’s High Precision Injection direct fuel injection system. It has also asked for approval from the California Air Resources Board to conduct this action. Affected vehicles may experience a failure of the high-pressure fuel pump.

Symptoms include long-crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the “Service Engine Soon” light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a Safe Mode accompanied by a tone and the illumination of the “Engine Malfunction” light.

Based on the individual service history of the vehicle, the action will entail replacement of the high-pressure fuel pump and/or a software update.

Approximately 130,000 vehicles are potentially affected with about 40,000 expected to require a new high pressure fuel pump. Affected BMW models include:
MY 2007–2010 335i models.
MY 2008–2010 135i, 535i and X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes
MY 2009 – 2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i

In a separate action, BMW has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it will voluntarily recall approximately 20,800 MY 2008 X5 Sports Activity Vehicles equipped with normally-aspirated inline six-cylinder engines to replace the low-pressure fuel pump. In this case, should the fuel pump experience a failure, the engine will stop running and the driver will lose power assist for the steering and brakes although both the steering and the brakes remain operational.

Letters will be sent by First Class mail to owners of affected vehicles in the coming weeks, requesting the scheduling of a service appointment with an Authorized BMW Center to have the update performed.

No injuries have been reported with either of these issues.

In the case of either issue, if the customer experiences a problem, they should contact their authorized BMW Center. Customers with additional questions should contact BMW Customer Relations at 1-800-563-4269 or email CustomerRelations@bmwusa.com.

the gearbox jerking issue is as annoying as the HPFP failure
bmw should ADMIT the problem, resolve it or provide extended warranty !

Re: Volvo recalls 300 in S'pore

Ya. agreed. The recent recall in U.S has already been publitised globally and there shd not be hiding here and there. Like some say, r they waitg for somethg worse to hapen then action?:screwedu: Its jus like the Audi/VW DSG issue whch my friend personaly experience the failure on highway. This r somethg i find so dangerous which brg hazard to road user as well.... but when asked PA why there is no action of recall been done?? Answer is that: not all DSG will expect to fail.... WTF.:woowooo:

Is it an ego or face tat premium car cant sacrify??

Re: Volvo recalls 300 in S'pore

You know since there is only 1 dealer for most marques here, I don't know why it's so difficult to operate in an honest and efficient way. In US, many dealers have to compete with one another to make sales, after-sales, etc. They treasure customers so much they cannot afford to fuck it up.

Whilst on the other hand here, most dealers make a monopoly on sales, after-sales because there is only 1 dealer to go to, I fully agree some people's view that there should be more than 1 dealer here because obviously dealers like PML are taking customer's as complete idiots.

It's already one month since the recall. Let's see how long this drags for...

That's exactly what happened with the N54 lawsuit. 3 individuals were so pissed off that they were returning back to BMW for fuel pump replacements and software upgrades. All of them studied the scope of work that BMW did to their cars especially the software updates that actually prevented the turbo chargers from operating at full capacity. Which in other words in simple terms means, you get less power from the original advertised power of the car.

I never liked updating BMW software on my cars because I always felt there could be an underlying problem that would be concealed with the software updates. Especially when it is problematic.

Re: Volvo recalls 300 in S'pore

actually my point is sg society has been living in "fear" for long time. fear of gov, fear of bosses/superiors, fear of how other people think etc etc etc
if the 'authorized' organisation or gov is not making a move ... we should not do anything ... everythings are under controlled presumely

Re: Volvo recalls 300 in S'pore

back to the topic of recall

i assume pml "know" there are gearbox jerking issues especially for E90 and E60 after many complaints
the question is did pml "notify" bmw asia or germany of possible problems that a recall is needed ?
i'm surprised how come e90post.com did not talk about gearbox issues. no gearbox issues for 328/330 mostly sold in usa ?

Doesn't make any difference if they notified BMW Asia or not. The after-sales there is just like PML. None of them ever held a screwdriver in their life. Paper pushers to be exact. BMW Germany definitely would be aware of this problem but because their market is huge, they would normally only recommend something if it has been officially communicated to them. So no, I don't think anything is being done on our end except for the fact that the single most important priority for these jokers is sales. Period.

Food for though : If the N54ers are not even being recalled on a problem at this magnitude, what makes you think that the problem with the E90 and E60 is going to matter at all? Doubt it will go anywhere.
