Valve Seals & Valve Cover Gasket change – white smoke problem solved – BMW E90

Dear all,

Just for sharing so we can all help each other benefit from this.

Problem:
I had white smoke coming out from my exhaust after idling for a few minutes and the engine consumes the engine oil.
It is estimated that I would need to top up 4L of engine oil monthly.

Solution:
I bought my own Valve Seals & Valve Cover Gasket from stockies in Kakit Bukit area and brought them to a workshop to change.
Please note that this is NOT considered a top overhaul. This is simply just a replacement of the worn off valve seals which caused the engine oil to leak.

Downtime:
Down time is within the same day, morning 10am till evening 5pm.
I went to cut hair, massage and shop around while waiting.

Feedback:
After the service, car feels more powerful, no more smelly white smoke. I am a happier BMW owner.

Please see attached pics for easy understanding.

PM me if u need to ask me for the stockies or workshop, it’s easier for me to reply.
Cheers~!

Did they clean up all that brown stuff along the way since the valve cover is off ?

would be a pity if they did not ......

I hope so too cos I wasn't there when they cover up the engine but I did the engine flush which should be good enough

Yup, I think so too.
I recommand for everyone regular maintenance to keep the car running well for u rather than expensive repairs.
I am a heavy user on my BMW, usually 100 ++ KM daily

Would have been a huge mistake if they did. The engine looks clean to me.

the brown colour is the colour of the thin coating of engine oil that protects and lubricates the moving parts.

remove that and you might need to run-in the engine again, as you would have to for a brand new car.

Re: Valve Seals & Valve Cover Gasket change – white smoke problem solved – BMW E90

Next time, pls do not ask them to do engine flush. Your engine looks clean. The flush would have dissolved the protective layer that has formed over the years.

valve seals look ok. So it might not have been the issue.

the 'valve cover gasket' is also called the 'head gasket'. Most likely could've been a leaking head gasket that caused the white smoke.

Did your workshop check the radiator to see whether there was any engine oil in the coolant?

Pls keep us posted on whether after this, you still need to top up engine oil frequently.
