Re: tyres skidding...

High speed braking with rear drum brakes can be very scary man.

I tried that on a test-drive Honda Jazz once.
Did emergency braking at 120 km/hr ... feeling is definitely less safe and the brake grip response (IMHO) is not as instantenous as the piston/calipers on discs on round.

Re: tyres skidding...

the previous car i drove, 1st gen. Kia Sportage, with rear drums/front disc + abs, still possible to lock up the rear wheels...

Re: tyres skidding...

Yo.. me also burnt rubber before as described by Jason .. probly due to old ABS acting up once a while.. ... also did 360, 180 and several 90 degrees spin.. kekekeke... due to driver skill F-types...:yummie: .. also wrong choice of tyres & tyres pressure.. :shakehea:

Jason... err.. tyres made from "stone" taken out of a "bridge".. wah lau.. sounds like Fred Flintstone ride leh.. most of our tyres are made from rubber one... kekekekekek:lol2:

Drive carefully during during this rainny & holidays season.. lots of slippery road, kuniang drivers and camera + WRX's out there... :naughty:

Re: tyres skidding...

haha the prob's i'm on disc brakes all ard....
my mechanic changed them to the 325 discs all ard cos he had some lyin ard the workshop...
haha

yahz but i guess it's true.....better drive safer durin this 'bonus' period....
hahaz...

Re: tyres skidding...

Don't know about others.. mine.. the ABS pretty tempermental.. some days.. functioning or at least the warning lights is off.. some days, the warning light comes on after warming up.. and that stupid damn thing didn't come on when I was at the workshop... hence.. mechanic takes a look.. "Bo Tai Chi leh"...

Re: tyres skidding...

haha wellz....considerin all the stupid things i've done with the car....
er......i'm pretty sure my ABS aint workin....
it's supposed to light up when the tyres all go screechin ritez....

tink i'd better get tt checked...

Mark ==> haha yahz he was nice....but it did come at a $300 charge....

Re: tyres skidding...

Most of the time, the ABS warning light do not light up. It lights up only when there's a fault. However, some owners have the warning bulb taken out when the ABS sort of kaput so that the irritating light does not show. Open up your instrument cluster and see if that is the case..

Re: tyres skidding...

hmz....okiez...shall try tt out next wk....

thankz man..

Re: tyres skidding...

hey jawsg...were you in pasir ris on saturday afternoon at about 2:30pm? i saw a car exactly like the one in your signature and we waved to each other?

Re: tyres skidding...

i dont think there's an ABS light in a bmw. the only way to tell when your abs kicks in is to feel it.

tyre screeching is very normal in hard braking, even with abs working. the best speed retardation is achieved at the onset of tyre screeching. the engineers working on your abs knows that too.

try hard braking on a wet or slippery surface. your abs should kick in and you'll feel it. only if in this condition you dont feel the abs juddering will that mean that your abs is really spoilt. my guess is that your car is okay.

Re: tyres skidding...

Yah bro.. you were heading in the oppsite direction weren't you.. kekekeke.

correct me if im wrong, having drum brakes doesn't necessary mean that it is inferior as compared to rear disc brakes. Advantages abt having rear disc brakes are future upgradeability n ease of maintenance(i.e changing of brake pads/disc). Effective braking power for both disc n drum MAY be the same afterall or even better for the latter. Generally, drum brakes last longer than disc brakes. These r wat i gathered from some mechanics too.
