tyre change, recommendation and comments

Hi,

My tyres are almost gone and had only realised them when I had to remove a nail on my run flats (16 - stock) from Hurry (this was from this forum that I had to look for a shop to repair my tyre).

The guy there offered the following

1. change my rims and tyres to 17 inch for $1400 (original BMW rims and 17 inch run flats)
2. change my rims and tyres ro 18 inch for each rim at $450 and tyres to my likings
3. change my tyres (all 4)

I am currently driving a E90 (fully stock) and would appreciate any recommendations, comments or imputs as I will probably need to change them soon.

Should I do my tyres/rim change from Hurry or otherwise? any recommendations?

Thanks,

Spiderman

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

What is the design of the 17 inch rims are they offering?

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

according to the guy over there, the rims are mostly 17" 5 spoke ones where new BMW owners go there to upgarde theire rims to 18" or 19".

perhaps, i should have taken some photos earlier

he told me that the rims are originals from BMW with the respective stock models

hope this helps

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

I would think that it is rather reasonable. Besides, the 17's will make your bimmer look more aggressive.

Go for it dude!

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

there have been many threads regarding run-flats and non-RF.

go read up before you do anything. diff schools of thought. and diff results after changing.

cost of RF tyres also more.

IMO, changing from 16" to 17" not much difference in appearance, but your ride comfort will also not be compromised by much. if you want more aggressive look, then go for 18" or more, but decrease in ride comfort will be noticeable.

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

When you say decrease in ride comfort are you refering to road noise or vibrations and bumps?

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

ride will feel more bumpy as tyre profile is thinner - less air to compress, harder side walls, etc, etc. upside is that handling will improve.

road noise depends on the type of tyres used - the softer the compound, the less road noise you get, but the faster the tyres wear out. and vice versa.

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

I comtemplated a set of 19's when I got my car, but reading about the rattling noises on E90's raised concerns using 19 inch wheels as it may channel more vibration through the cabin thereby increasing the probability of rattles and stuff.

Do let me know your thoughts.

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

recommendation (by quite a few mags and forums) for e46 is anything up to 18" if comfort is not to be compromised too much.

not sure about the e90, due to the RF that are used. there was widespread criticism since the RF were used with the e90 launch 3 years ago, but the quality of the RF tyres have improved quite a bit.

many people have switched to non-RF and have gotten better ride quality, and also due to the fact that non-RF tyres are cheaper. and becos Singapore is so small, tyre shops are aplenty, so changing tyres is quite convenient.

19" (whether RF or not) will definitely result in a stiffer ride, as compared to higher profile tyres.

Re: tyre change, recommendation and comments

thanks for your advise... I will look out and I do have about 2 weeks' of tyre use left

What is the name of the tyre shop you went to?
