tyre balancing

What's the difference between 'on the car' high speed wheel / tyre balancing compared to 'off the car' balancing that we normally see in tyre shops? How does the motorist know which to choose?

Re: tyre balancing

on wheel balancing allows for balancing of the hubs and brake components. Usually with off wheel balancing in the shop, a sensitive machine will yield results that are more than sufficient for most cars. It is only when the brakes and hubs have corrosion or other damage and there is an inbalanced hub that on wheen balancing is needed. Also for cars that are very sensitive (read: rose jointed suspension arms) that high speed wheel balancing may be needed. Look for shops that have tyre balancing machines that rotate the tyre fast enough that the thread cannot be seen. Those machines are usually more sensitive and can replicate the actual speeds. Personally i go to south east tyres to balance my tires about every 20k km.

High speed balancing so far has not been required.

Cheers
