Not there this year (i know Tobynik is there... Grrrrrr)
But here's a preview of this year's show before the big coverage starts streaming out.... my fav. auto show of the year

BEHIND THE SCENES>> TAS 2011 - THE SET UP - Speedhunters

AY0F3217.jpg

Our Behind the Scenes theme continues now with a preview look at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon Show. As you read this, the Makuhari Messe doors are just opening to the press, allowing swarms of trigger happy photographers and scoop-hunting journalists in to what is without a doubt the biggest show of the year for those immersed in the world of JDM. Just like last year I managed to get myself inside the halls of the exhibition center as manufacturers, parts makers and tuning shops were all still beginning to set up their display areas and bringing in their freshest cars.
IMG_0192.jpg

Not wanting to miss anything of importance I did end up arriving at the show a tad earlier than I really should of, as there really wasn't much to see except for a few cars and lots of contracted stand builders hard at work. This did give me time to catch up with Mamina Inada, Daijiro's daughter, who was there setting up the Optionland booth. She mentioned that although this year there is a similar number of exhibitors, there are quite a lot more cars than in previous years, something that became rather obvious towards the end of the day. Also she was very pleased with all the feedback you guys had on Dai-chan's interview I posted up the other day, so thank you for taking the time to leave your thoughts!
AY0F3132.jpg

This is what the middle hall looked like at about 10 am.
AY0F3359.jpg

Cars kept coming in and I did begin to spot the first few jaw-dropping rides like this amazing Crown Majesta from D'custom Freak. Offset and camber redefined!!
AY0F3025.jpg

Most of the unloading was being done at the back of the Makuhari Messe where I ran across this Wald LS. Don't worry, the air suspension was set high as it had just been unloaded from the transporter, once it was positioned on the stand it was dropped to an acceptable ride height!
AY0F3033.jpg

To tell you the truth I was expecting the show to be overrun by CR-Zs but I didn't really spot that many, hopefully more arrived overnight! This particular car was from AMS, the Terra CR-Z.
AY0F3038.jpg

This was the first car that I shot on the day. I don't know much about it as the spec boards weren't out yet, but it is quite curious. I would have thought the awkward IS convertible's rear design would be enough to get plenty of looks, but obviously not!
AY0F3052.jpg

D'custom Freak will definitely be stealing a lot of attention today at the show as their two cars were simply oozing the kind of presence extreme VIP rides like this strive to obtain. This is actually a Celsior with a Century front-end conversion...
IMG_0179.jpg

...and another look at the Majesta, this time from the side where you can get a feel for the sporty look they are trying to achieve. Definitely two of the most memorable cars I saw yesterday!
AY0F3068.jpg

Lunchtime came and most of the three halls were still pretty empty...
AY0F3129.jpg

...so I headed upstairs to the restaurant and dined in style, with the best the stuff on the menu, JDM curry rice!
AY0F3143.jpg

I did take my time eating that creamy curry and by the time I returned down to the show floor, things were beginning to get quite interesting. Impul is always one of the first shops to get their hands on the latest Nissans and they have already substantially modified the new-gen Elgrand (sold in the US as the new Quest). This Elgrand is obviously an important vehicle in the vanning scene and I must have spotted at least a dozen prepared by various shops.
AY0F3150.jpg

This is the ISF Club Performance Accessory built by TRD. The parts fitted to this car could hit the market very soon and give a new breath of life to the TRD brand. I loved the high quality carbon like the hood and rear spoiler.
AY0F3151.jpg

Remember the lightweight ISF CCS Concept that was shown at last year's Auto Salon? Well this is its track-going fire-breathing brother, the CCS-R!
AY0F3158.jpg

This Racing version looks and sounds like a very finished and functional complete race car, further confirming that Lexus and Toyota are as serious as ever about giving us all hardcore, fun sports cars. Now all they have to do is sell the damn things!
AY0F3297.jpg

Even the CT200h has been given the F-Sport treatment! This car still looks weird to me however, it seemed so aggressive in Concept form at the 2009 Tokyo Motorshow but the street version has been far too watered down. What do you guys think? Maybe a CSS-R version would make it more appealing!
AY0F3275.jpg

Honda were putting together one of the coolest and most original display areas I've ever seen at TAS, something that resembled a lineup of pit-garages, each displaying different cars and concepts.
IMG_0066.jpg

First thing I did was to get a closer inspection of the TS-1X CR-Z that we saw the other day. I just had to get a look at the rear end and that strange split rear spoiler with integrated intake and air outlet. The weird thing on the side is called a "rear quarter flap" and is there for some sort of aerodynamic reason. Will have to wait to see the press release to find out exactly what.
IMG_0072.jpg

Now it's very cool and everything that Honda along with Modulo haven't forgotten to keep owners of the legendary NSX happy with some cool new parts, but what about making a successor guys? How long will you keep teasing us all with that work of art that is the HSV-010 GT!!
IMG_0136.jpg

And on the subject of CR-Zs, HKS Kansai Service brought their new demo car sporting their full aero kit. I will have to check what is under the hood of this car...
AY0F3141.jpg

...as well as J's Racing one!
IMG_0196.jpg

Justin over at Caterham Japan has finally begun getting the crazy R500 into Japan. This example is fresh off the boat and looking mighty nice. Now Justin, how about letting me borrow this for a while? I promise I won't go over 3,000 rpm!
AY0F3167.jpg

Now this is bound to interest a lot of people out there. Kleers have come up with a UV protector for dry, wet and lacquered carbon fiber, helping shield the finish from the nasty effects of the sun. I'm sure this will do well in Japan!
AY0F3171.jpg

Super wide SL!
AY0F3180.jpg

It was all very strange heading to the D1 exhibition area. There was definitely a weird energy around the make shift paddock. Last year Tsuchiya was out designing the course with the Team Orange guys while all the D1 drivers watched the and joked around in the background. There wasn't much going on this time round...how will D1 get over the big loss of Dai and Tsuchiya I wonder?
AY0F3207.jpg

Remember that cool SR20-powered Y34 Gloria that I spotted at the 2009 Exciting Car Showdown? The people that were behind that, Super Made, came up with this extremely unique looking S15, the same car in the opening picture. The 16-inch Equips couldn't look any better!
AY0F3239.jpg

Another car I need to investigate further. Apparently power comes courtesy of a supercharged L-series engine! You can always trust Rocky Auto to come up with cool ideas!
AY0F3329.jpg

"Wide" is obviously a pretty evident theme this year!
AY0F3347.jpg

Porsche 962C. Race car perfection. Thank you Dunlop for having this iconic car on display.
AY0F3371.jpg

Figures that the first GTO I see in Japan has to be modified! Staggered Absolute pinstriped wheels (20" front, 21" rear) and a matte white body wrap for an imposing look.
IMG_0045.jpg

Stay tuned for our full TAS coverage as Linhbergh and I hit the halls of the Makuhari Messe to bring you an in-depth look at the best Japan has to offer.

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon 2011

Some Toyotas

While Lexus does already offer a selection of F-Sport branded TRD bits for the IS-F, the automaker now seems poised to deliver a selection of track-focused goodies for those who want to take their 5.0-liter V8 sedan around the track.
Looking nearly identical to the IS-F Club Circuit Sport concept from last yea’s Tokyo Auto Salon, the new TRD model sports some subtle front lip add-ons as well as a rear diffuser. A vented carbon fiber hood is also part of the package, as is a simply massive rear spoiler. And let’s not forget the light weight forged wheels.
Here’s hoping that Lexus does decide to bring these parts to market for customers in North America.

Twelve months ago at the Tokyo Auto Salon, Lexus introduced the IS-F CCS – a track-tuned version of its high-performance sports sedan. Now the engineers over at Toyota HQ have taken that idea to a new level with a new concept dubbed the CCS-R.
CCS, we should point out, stands for Circuit Club Sports. And the R? Well, it stands for racing.
Unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon, the CCS-R comes painted in the same brilliant orange as its predecessor, and has both a carbon fiber hood and trunk lid, but there are some notable changes. It’s hard to ignore the racing touches, like the massive front splitter, cannards and the novelty sized rear spoiler that will help keep that rear end planted at almost any speed. Other upgrades include some custom racing seats, a roll cage, as well as some ultra light weight wheels with racing slicks.
With continued rumored that Lexus will take the IS-F racing, we’re hoping this concept brings the Toyota luxury brand one step closer.
GALLERY: Lexus IS-F CCS-R

Over a year ago, Toyota introduced a limited edition iQ GRMN in Japan, with a supercharger strapped to the tiny car’s 1.3-liter 4-cylinder to produce 116-hp. Now GRMN (a special line of cars produced by Gazoo Racing) has released a Racing Concept based on that model.
The vehicle has just been put on display at the Tokyo Auto Salon, which is taking place over the weekend in Japan.
With a wide body and a roll cage this tiny hatch (roughly a foot longer than a Smart car) is ready for the track. A full compliment of aerodynamic parts is also included, made entirely of carbon fiber. And let’s not forget a stunning set of 17-inch wheels with some 205-wide tires.

And a Honda

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Lamborghini’s designers had gotten a hold of the Honda CR-Z. Despite its matte-black paint and wild bodywork the TS-1X Concept has nothing in common with the Reventon supercar.
Based on the new hybrid sports car, the TS-1X gets a fighter-jet inspired aero kit that actually seems to work with the CR-Z’s futuristic styling. In both the front and rear are small aero-bits that remind us of the flying buttresses on the Ferrari 599, which are designed to increase downforce while not adding drag.
Also included are a set of 18-inch wheels, which look absolutely massive on the tiny CR-Z. And inside those rollers (which look like painted Civic Type R models), is a set of TS-1X branded Nissin brakes.

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon 2011

Speedhunters Day 1 coverage

IMG_4308.jpg

The Tokyo Auto Salon is maddness, pure maddness. Having attended SEMA for the first time last year and now TAS, I can safely say that the Auto Salon is in a class of its own. First there's the shear amount of quality cars, then throngs of people everywhere, and to top it off, you receive a sensory overload to all the senses at almost every exhibitor booth.
IMG_4312.jpg

The doors opened on the first day to welcome the press and media. First order of business for the day was to meet up with fellow Speedhunter, Dino Dalle Carbonare. I love the fact that his name sounds like some mysterious yet delicious Italian dish.
IMG_4363.jpg

Like Dino during TAS set up day, I also fell in love with this Crown Majesta from D'custom Freak. The white painted lettering on the tires really helps it give that sporty look.
IMG_4375.jpg

This slammed 1989 Nissan Sunny pickup truck was of particular interest to me. The original motor was ripped out and replaced with a INZ-FXE hybrid motor from a Toyota Prius!
IMG_4413.jpg

RE Amemiya brought out their new time attack 3 rotor FD RX-7.
IMG_4431.jpg

One of the many surprises of the show was the appearance of Veilside who has been missing from TAS for the past 5 years. Can you believe that this started off as a Mark 4 Supra?
IMG_4463.jpg

This is a car I had to do a double take on. A Hakosuka front-ended Nissan Stagea! It even has the metal Hakosuka bumpers in the rear.
IMG_4348.jpg

Here's a car I never thought I'd see in person, the hyper blinged out D.A.D. Mercedes SL.
IMG_4468.jpg

Rocky Auto made an appearance with their 240ZG.
IMG_4524.jpg

Another surprise of the show, a Rocket Bunny kitted S13 on some Dayton-like wire wheels. Never thought I'd be writing those things in the same sentence....
\
IMG_4700.jpg

Zero Sports' take on the new 4-door Impreza.
IMG_4532.jpg

What an awesome jacket.
IMG_4570.jpg

A little after lunch, D1GP held a 2011 kick off exhibition event in a nearby car park. It seemed so long ago since I last shot a bit of drifting and shooting some D1 action for the first time isn't a bad way to start the year....
IMG_4629.jpg

As many of us know, Daijiro Inada and Keichi Tsuchya both left the D1GP Corporation not too long ago. So this exhibition event was an opportune time to introduce the new judges to the public.
IMG_4604.jpg

The crowd was completely enthralled with the opening ceremonies and also with ManaP introducing the new judges. D1GP has a whole different atmosphere compared to Formula D....
IMG_4631.jpg

It wasn't too long until the on-track action flared up. Eight car tandem? You'll hear no complaints from me.
IMG_4579.jpg

I have to say that the highlight of the day weren't the cars of TAS or the D1 action, but instead, man's amazing hair. I'm sure he became a bit creeped out by constant staring. I couldn't stop being so amazed.
IMG_4653.jpg

I did a bit more exploring when I got back inside the convention halls. This VIP'd out Toyota Celsior became one of my favorite cars of the show.
IMG_4657.jpg

I tried to get a shot from the front, but was completely blocked by a girl and a throng of photographers.
IMG_4694.jpg

A female in front of a car with a multitude of photographers was a common sight on the Auto Salon show floor. These frequent occurrences made shooting certain cars a bit difficult...
IMG_4720.jpg

...but made for some great photographic opportunities. So many cameras.
IMG_4662.jpg

In the Honda booth, I noticed this CR-Z. Looks like they're looking to get into some one-make racing with these hybrid hot-hatches.
IMG_4664.jpg

A Nismo S-Tune'd Elgrand. Imagine taking the kids to school in this thing....
IMG_4669.jpg

I was completely amazed when dancers appeared in the Nissan booth. What a way to get the crowd's attention!
IMG_4682.jpg

There's a whole lot of van love at TAS. I'll be exploring vanning a bit more tomorrow.
IMG_4741.jpg

I'll close this first installment of TAS coverage with this airbagged Artis Audi which has been wrapped in an alligator skin-like vinyl. Believe when I say that this photo does not do it justice.
The Tokyo Auto Salon is a place filled with wonderful, awe inspiring and strange things. After a whole day walking the show and soaking in the sights, its hard to remember that it's only day one.
More to come!

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon 2011 by Speedhunters

Day II from Speedhunters!
IMG_0445.jpg

I just got home from my third straight day at the Tokyo Auto Salon and I'm beat. However, before I head off to bed for a much needed recharge, I thought I'd leave you with a brief overview of some of the cars that stood out the most to me over these two show-days. Hopefully this will keep you guys updated as Linhberg and I do our best to cover every angle of the show before we start getting into things in more detail.
IMG_0005.jpg

The first thing I did Friday morning at 9 am when the show opened to the press was to grab a shot of the RE-Amemiya Hurricane 7, the tri-rotor FD3S everyone has been waiting for, and post it up on the Speedhunters Facebook page. Hopefully we will be seeing a lot of Ama-san's latest creation as it joins the time attack circuit this year, but it wouldn't be right if this main car stole all the spotlight, as the new wide-body RX-8 right next to it, if quite a lot prettier. Talking to Ken Amemiya I discovered the SE3P is an automatic and has only very basic modifications. However, the same body kit is being fitted to Suenaga's D1 RX-8 when it finally makes its debut at Round 1 in Odaiba.
AY0F3491.jpg

It's taken a while, but more wide-body conversions are being released for the R35. Abflug came up with this new kit, which simply put is just wild!
AY0F4288.jpg

The Japanese Police are really stepping things up to keep those pesky street drifters under control!
AY0F3563.jpg

Suzuki-san's Scorch S15 time attack car is looking far more serious for 2011, with all-new dry-carbon front fenders, roof, bumper and huge canards. With the new GCG turbo from Australia he is hoping to get his best time at Tsukuba down into the 54-seconds.
AY0F3591.jpg

On top of two equally cool S30s, one powered by an LT1 the other by an RB25DET, all eyes were on this other Rocky Auto creation at the G-Works stand. The stroked L28 displaces 3.1L and is force-fed air by a supercharger. The car was just finished in time for the show so no final power figures have been released, but Watanabe-san thinks at least 400 HP will be available once tuned properly.
AY0F5603.jpg

Nissan took advantage of the Tokyo Auto Salon to launch the $250,000 R35 GT-R RC. Strangely enough the RC is based on the per-2011 car so doesn't get the 530 HP VR38, but has to do with the 485 HP unrevised motor. Still, with a lighter body thanks to heavy use of carbon, a full race-spec roll-cage, massive Brembo Racing front brakes, adjustable race suspension and Yokohama 290-section 20-inch tires it will be perfect for teams needing a production-car based racer. The RC is eligible to enter in many championships around the world so I'm sure we will be seeing more R35s on the race scene around the world this year.
AY0F3666.jpg

You got to give it to Nissan, even the new Leaf was subjected to a little light tuning. Is this the first lowered EV??
AY0F3765.jpg

Ahhh...this is more like it. The RH9 area was like a momentary step-back into the good old days where your car's engine performance was far more important than pretty much anything!
AY0F3853.jpg

Another widened R35, this time from Axell.
AY0F4903.jpg

Rolls Royce, meet Junction Produce. Am I the only one that thinks modern VIP style really fits the Phantom?
AY0F5230.jpg

Imports are a very big part of TAS this year, from expensive exotics to luxury sedans. The Panamera was an obvious hit with all the big name Japanese and German tuning companies.
AY0F5332.jpg

I bumped into Otsuka-san from Check Shop, you may remember the feature on his M5 back in 2009. For 2011 he is sticking with BMW but has gotten himself a new M3 to play around with and fitted it with this new model of Absolute wheels sporting a very original blue anodized finish.
IMG_0347.jpg

As Linhberg showed us yesterday the girlhunters were out by the hundreds at the show...
IMG_0071.jpg

...getting those all-important detailed shots. I just had to take a peak at the angles some were going for! It is Behind the Scenes month after all right?
IMG_0199.jpg

You can expect to see plenty of non-car related coverage too in upcoming posts, albeit tastefully shot.
IMG_0485.jpg

The big news at the show yesterday was that Naoki Nakamura of Team Burst was once again arrested for illegal street drifting. At the same time the sentencing from a previous offense came through, consisting of a two-year driver's license suspension and a pretty hefty fine. Upon hearing this, the D1 Corporation instantly banned him indefinitely from competing in D1 Grand Prix and D1 Street Legal. Today, some of the D1 Corporation people headed over to the D-Max stand where his cars are on display and removed his name from both, along with the D1 windscreen banners.
IMG_0358.jpg

And on the subject of D1, I spotted Hibino, Orido and Koguchi at the Yokomo stand today in the middle of what looked like one of those much-loved Japanese talk shows. Mana P was doing his thing on the mic and Taniguchi was also present. Judging from yesterday's D1 exhibition it looks like Nob might have taken over the role of judge in D1, but nothing has been confirmed quite yet.
IMG_0222.jpg

I've decided the D'custom Freak Majesta and Century-faced Celsior are my two favorite cars of the show, I mean seriously, could they be more Japanese? I think Linhberg should do a spotlight on one of these...what do you guys think?
IMG_0373.jpg

Kei van's are probably one of the most unique things about TAS and there are more than ever this year, this being the coolest as it foregoes the usual VIP-ish, vanning look for a more vintage sports car feel with that Hakosuka-like bumper-mounted oil cooler and overfender-rubbing tires.
IMG_0362.jpg

It might be hard to gauge from the picture but this Legacy B4 was sporting pretty wildly widened front and rear fenders!
IMG_0351.jpg

The theme over at the STI booth was "Proud of Boxer" and that is a message that has been very evident over the last few months with all the cool cars they have been coming up with. Based on the new carbon roofed STI Impreza tS, this GVB is built to take on the Nurbugring 24h race this year, one of the toughest endurance races in the world.
AY0F5422.jpg

The limited edition tS the race car is based on.
AY0F5641.jpg

As I walked out of the almost deserted Makuhari Messe tonight I stopped for another look at the S & Company Ferrari GTO. The owner, Shikata-san allowed me to do a quick spotlight on the limited edition 599-based special...boy what a car!
That's about it for now, Linhberg will be giving us a different angle on TAS soon, as he checks out the impressive selection of JDM goodness present every year in the parking lots of the Makuhari Messe.
