To those with GPS/NAV - Question!

Hey all,

Just wondering what's the difference between "Short Route" & "Fast Route" when u are setting the parameters for NAV to direct you to a certain place?

Anyone?

Thanks!

Re: To those with GPS/NAV - Question!

Fast route optimizes for highway.
Short route optimizes for distance minimum.

eg. Serangoon Garden to Tampines

Fast route - routes to CTE, PIE, then Tampines
Short route - routes to TPE

Bro, this is from guild book or practically u hv tried? I tried once on the same route from my house CCK to Gul Road.. both lead me to the same route whether i set to Fast route or short route.

Re: To those with GPS/NAV - Question!

Tried, tried. Both Garmin GPS and BMW 630 has the same result.

Reason is because Serangoon Gdn. has a quick route to CTE, so taking into consideration the speed limits, without RDS, the system assumes MAXIMUM speed on all roads.

With the maximum speed assumption, theoretically it is very fast to travel from Ser gdn. (60kmh short distance) to CTE (90kmh) to PIE (90kmh).

Theoretically faster than S'goon gdn. to TPE long distance at 60kmh then TPE at 90kmh to Tampines.

But in reality, taking into consideration the CTE congestion etc., TPE is much faster.

Re: To those with GPS/NAV - Question!

I think rule of thumb is...

In intra-city travelling, take short route
In long distance travelling, take fast route.

Because otherwise, if you take the fast route in intra-city travelling, the intra city will take you out to highway then back into the city, which is very slow.

Re: To those with GPS/NAV - Question!

actually fast route works if there is a real time feedback for the traffic conditions.

Re: To those with GPS/NAV - Question!

So Fast Route is dependent on RDS... cuz sometimes I feel that sometimes neither are optimium due to traffic conditions!

Thanks for clearing it up CaySman!

There is no RDS/TMC in Singapore, is there?
