I recently made a big deal hating all the encapsulation around our engines, causing intense heat and degrading the hoses and engine mountings permanently. I also mentioned how nice Honda engines were, honest and naked all the time, you see the block and all.
Well now I think again. Look at the Lexus IS-F engine, cover removed:
Lexus IS-F Engine: Topless and Naked
Combining with what I've read elsewhere in print, the reason for all the snakes and pipes is because the engine has additional electric scavenger pumps for oil even in the cam cover, as a return path to the oil to the sump. And instead of some performance car companies like Ferrari and Porsche actually building the oil channels directly inside the engine block casting, this engine was not built for the horsepower it is generating now, and was designed for wet sump low-G operation , but the conversion to high G has necessitated so many hoses.
I would expect the new E9X M3 V8 engine to look about the same actually, searching for it.
Just to add - the worst thing about the IS-F is that IT DOES NOT HAVE AN LSD! The open diff just burns money (rubber) when you switch off VDIM traction control. SUX! Made for America!
