Hi anyone has a familiarity with the E46's history??
Tell me more
e.g developments, history, tech specs, engine specs, performance within the 318-325 range,
what are the SE, I and IA, differences.

Re: Tell me more........

Wow bro, started two threads to learn about the E46? :)

Almost everything you need to know here about history, specs and performance is on wiki:

BMW E46 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Probably the only thing lacking is fuel consumption and maintenance costs, which can vary a fair bit depending on your usage, driving style, luck....

When I had my E46 318i I averaged about 9km/l. Mine was a manual.

As for the 'SE', 'iA', etc - 'SE' is more of a UK/Europe thing which means the car is specced slightly higher (leather seats, CD player, larger wheels, etc). The 'A' in ' iA' just refers to auto transmission.

Re: Tell me more........

So is there such thing of a SPORTS EDITION (SE) in this line between 1999-2001???
I looked at the engine that its an inline 4 M43TUB19 engine, what can i do to give it morre oomph?? Not many 320 around nowadays..
Any expected damage from a 100000km engine??

Re: Tell me more........

no SE in that period
at 100k mileage.....Shudnt be any issue engine wise but be prepared for other things like radiator, air con coils etc

The M43 is the worse block in the E46 series, 4-cylinders, 1.9-litre, 115 bhp. Very under-powered. Gear-shift there is no steptronic function for earlier batch. Hard to mod.

Damage at 100K - radiator, usual suspect gearbox (perhaps at 150K).....

Re: Tell me more........

Wkawkak............well kentona......I can see where you are coming from........I'm just going to use it for daily purpose. apart from being an enthusiast, my pockets are not very deep.
Thus I have to confine myself being very reasonable.
Slow and steady building my business in this tough times before I get to e93 level .............
Ken, Given the limitations in the m43 engine, Are there any ideas to overcome the limitations?

Re: Tell me more........

Hmm, Ken, reckon the N42B20 is the better engine?? Facelifted model..............MY2004 Hmmmm...looks like the power ratio is pretty good hm.

That's the valvetronic engine, 143 bhp/200 nm, magnesium block, cannot force-induce......... the M54 is the better block.
