Sway Bars and Strut Bars

Hello folks, I was thinking of reducing the roll on my car. Besides investing heavily in a pair of good shocks, I was thinking of starting off with both sway bars and strut bars. Are there any thicker aftermarket sway bars available?

Would appreciate if anyone out there could point me in the direction :) :) :)

Hello Ryan,

Mine is a E39, 525i and is running on 18'. I have also installed a hi-op strut bar and is thinking of ARB. From your recommendation, I should go for a suspension upgrade first as I am interested in improving the road holding, instead of ARB, right?

I have check around for suspension and was quoted S$1.7 for Sach prof. If the different is not great, should I consider ACS suspension instead?

Thanks in advance for your advise.

Paging for Racebred and Alan!!!

black_cat: they're more experienced in this aspect!

Not a problem, it's actually the rest like Racebred and Goyogi who has contributed :)

They're the experienced ones!

Hi there,..
Indeed, if your priority is for road holding then you are already halfway to getting it there. Your bigger rims and tires already contribute to improved road holding. I suppose the next will be suspension upgrade to enhance it even further.

ARB upgrade isnt exactly to improve roadholding, rather...it's to reduce the body roll of your car so that when you do cornering, your car will corner sharper and flatter instead of having that roll-feeling.

AC Susp sure costs a bomb compared to Sach Perf.
Why not also consider KW and Bilstein? I hv a friend of mine who drives E39 520 and recently fitted KW Var1 for around SGD 2.9K and he likes it.

I dont know how many of our forumers here who drive E39 have got their susp upgraded but if you dont mind asking ard, I am sure they will offer you a ride in their cars to let u feel the differing susp set up.

Gd luck

i beg to differ. anti-roll bars DO help in roadholding.

your tyres camber changes with the compression or the lengthening of your suspension travel. you can see it gaining negative camber when 3 obese lard-drinking mamas sit in your car, and you can see it gaining positive camber when you jack up your car.

when conering, the inside wheels will gain negative camber and your outside wheels will gain positive camber. for maximum traction, tyres must be FLAT on the ground. leaning to any one side reduces the contact patch and hence traction or roadholding.

by reducing roll (from stiffer shocks & springs to stiffer anti-roll bars), the tyres stay flatter, and you corner better. this is the primary aim of the anti-roll bar.

Agree with RB... ARB do help with road holding... but in terms of which will improve road holding more, then go with the shocks and springs first, then do the ARB.
