Straight through center pipes for E46 2.2

Hi bros,

I have decided to remove my center CAT and replace with 2.5" pipes.

I was told that the stock pipes running to and from the CAT are different in diameter. Meaning that the right and left pipes have different diameters? Anyone could shed a light on why is it so? Is there going to be any big difference in performance if I were to change them to pipes of identical diameter?

Too afraid that my wife would not be able to stand the resonance from an aftermarket muffler, therefore decided to just remove the center CAT.

TIA.
