spare tyre well floaded

Dear Bros,

I was cleaning and clearing up my car boot, and was shocked:ultrasho when i lifted up the board covering the spare tyre well, found the well flooded with water (water level covering up the entire spare tyre!!), and funny thing is all above the covering board is dry and clean (No any sign off water stain or tell tale sign???).

Clean and dry up the flooded well, and try to look for any other possible sipage from below the well, but there are no holes at all???

The only explaination is sipage via the back tail lights gasket and water flowing directly all the way to the well??

Does any bro here encounter this problem before?? can anyone help on this issue??

Please Help!:helpp!:

Many thanks in-advance.

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Wao..... that's really worrying and shocking.

I believe is the rubber seals are worn out..... what i proposed is you drip up and use a water hose and spray your boot area and then identify the leakage.

Afterwhich, then send in for repair.

Re: spare tyre well floaded

This is another suggestion. Put your car on hoist & lift it above ur head. I think there is a hole beneath spare wheel. Maybe that plug dropped off.

Yes... believe there is a drain plug

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Dear Bros,

many thanks for all your speedy replies and suggestions, will try all possible to source the sipage, but i think it is not from the bottom cos it will only does draining purposes even if water sipage from below (the best thing is there are no hole found at all when check), still sourcing for other alternative (i.e., extracting others experience in this) and will perform a through check ASAP, can't drive around with such unknown condition? especially raining days. Luckily found out early (sometimes it pays to be alittle hard working cleaning up the entire boot), will keep alll informed once sipage and solution found.

Thanks again for all replies and suggestions and any bro who encountered such problem before please share and benefits all.

Cheers!

When i went to do my wheel alignment, the uncle saw the draining hole & help me to find a plug for it. Uncle told me that if it is not plug, water may go in.

Water get into E39 rear lamp is quite normal due to aging of rubber seal. On rainly days, my rear lamp looks like lighted aquarium.

Dear Zorro,

Thanks for sharing,i think yes, previous owner had changed to after market type! My car is accident free! (ruled out uneven curve and touch wood! kekeke!), thats a good suggestion to look into, anyway noticed that both sides taillights seal has worn out, and has ordered the new seals from pml hopefully it fits well (waiting for it to arrive) will try replacing it and then check on leakage again!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Cheers!

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Dear Davidtch,

Thanks for sharing on your previous experience, yes i also feels that there must be a drainage hole(will look out for it too), but the problem is the entire spare tyre is floaded! we are talking like 40-50 Litres?? ,if supposingly there is a drainage plug? and is removed? be it sipage from below or rather functioning as draining it ? i think it should not flood up the entire well (unless i stucked in the recent floaded orchard road, kekeke!).

As for your previous experience which bro zorro share the same issue (water in tailights), mine has no water or tell tale sign of water droplets seen in both tail lights at all?? (possible different model build, different structure?).

Anyway thanks for sharing again! "yours lit aquarium" Mine errr "Pond without lights" kekekeke!

Cheers bro!

Re: spare tyre well floaded

I had this exact same problem with my previous ride. My mechanic had to literally hide inside the closed boot while getting his assistant to hose the car down with water to find the source of leak... eventually it led to a small hole that was not sealed properly when my ride was repaired after an accident.... good luck finding the source!!

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Hi Ikm,

Many thanks for the info on your previous experience, m sure mine accident free, but reading through your experience, may i ask if that hole found due to impact by the accident? or is it originally in the structure with no proper sealing done during repair?, and if so, can you tell me where is the location of the hole to look out for?.

Cheers!

Re: spare tyre well floaded

It was a Japanese... I think the sealing was poorly done during repair. The "hole" wasn't visible, but it's in one of those little corners that's really easy to miss...

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Oic, thanks for the info, m still trying to source for the problem, but had found some leads to it now, need further confirmation thou, will post the cause once confirmed.

Cheers!

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Hi Bros,

Thanks for all your suggestions and sharing of experiences in helping to resolve the problem.

I have sucessfully identified 2 major causes that resulted in my E46 "floaded" spare tyre well - primarily the rubber stopper at the car boot lid and secondly the rubber seal running around the car boot.

The rubber stopper was unknowingly adjusted at a wider closing gap between the boot lid and car boot (maybe previous owner or mechanic did this for whatever reason I don't know of ???:huhhuh:)

This wider gap allows water sippage during heavy rainfall or car wash using high pressure watergun, from rubber seal and channel into the boot lock (female side), then directly to the spare tyre well top (storage area of car jack and stopper), without wetting or affecting the boot's compartment.

Hence no tell tale sign (water marks) was shown when checking - try pouring some water into the boot lock (female side) and you will know what I mean.

Moreover, the slightly "aged and harden" rubber seal lining around the boot failed to cushion the metal boot lid tightly and further encourages this serious sippage to occur.

After addressing all these issues, my E46 is dry and healthy again, hahaha!!!

A note to all bros who have identify such similiar indicative signs from your car, do bother to check out on these 2 areas in case they are your source of headaches.......

Hopefully this post helps in one way or another to any bro(s) who encounter such issue? :silenced:(touch wood)

Unquote: This is base on my E46, it might not be the same for other models!:huhhuh:

Cheers!:woottt:

Re: spare tyre well floaded

Gee reminds me of my old old old car (not BMW) which would have water trapped all over after a rainny day. I had the same issue in the spare tyre well but that was solved by me removing the drain plug, but more got trapped in the other parts of the body and the car sounded like I was enjoying the sound of sea waves when I drive it after a rainy day. There was no fix for it... Well... Yeah i fixed it... By selling the damn ride :p
