Some interesting details on tyres, rims, brakes

Just some random musings on anal stuff from so many hours in tyre/rim shops....

When mounting wheels, lubricate the wheel studs with lithium grease before torquing

Why lubricate? 2 reasons. So they won't seize, prevent rust, and so that it's smooth enough so that when you torque the lug nut, the resistance against the torque is from the stretching of the stud and not from the rust and dirt.

Why lithium grease? Normal grease can or not? Normal grease can, but it will not stay. The moment your wheel gets hot, the normal grease melts and flows down and sprays around your wheel everywhere. When no grease in the lug nut then the rust prevention will not happen.

You must torque the lug nuts

Why torque? Can't just use `feel'? NO. torquing will equalize the tension of the wheel studs, so your wheel hub, rotor and wheel all clamped together same force all round. If the force not the same, thermal expansion will distort stuff, particularly the rotor, and cause brake judder in the long run.

You must clean the wheel centre hub once you dismount the rotor with brake fluid

So that no dust or rust interrupts the smooth interface between the wheel centre hub and rotor. Even a few microns of rust or dust will cause run-out in the rotor, the bigger the rotor the worse. This run-out will cause judder and vibration over 3K km thereabouts.

Don't use the air gun to torque the wheel lugs

The guns usually have no torque control, even if they do, they are impact wrenches and the torque control is not good. You need a steady pressure for torque.

Great tips Centurion!...sad to say, not many tyre shops will "lovingly" do as you suggest!!

Re: Some interesting details on tyres, rims, brakes

Yup... not many tire shops use torque wrenches to tighten our wheels

Re: Some interesting details on tyres, rims, brakes

Centurion,

Which tyre shop do u go to?

Re: Some interesting details on tyres, rims, brakes

honestly, I do it all myself. I go all places, Poh Heng, Yap Bros, Leong Seng, Kian Tiong, eSpace. Only Kian Tiong and eSpace will do it for you without asking, LS and YB will do it if you ask, and PH does not 'seem' to have a torque wrench - I had to supply my own.

If a shop dismounted my wheels, and put them back without me, I untorque the wheels when the wheels are on the ground, and I torque them back by hand, 110Nm for the Odyssey and 130Nm for the Porsche.

For brakes, I have to make sure I'm there when they remount on the wheel hub. They refuse to blow the wheel hub, so I have to supply my own cleaner wipes, then they use a rag with brake fluid to wipe the hub, and I will supply a clean rag to wipe it all out.

eSpace does it all lovingly like that, and I love them. Andy is great. He has a more precise gauge of lithium grease than I can even find.

Another word about torquing. You can't rely on 1 torque session.

You torque first.

Go drive 1km.

Then torque again.

------------------------------

One more thing - about breaking in / bedding in brakes.

Don't let the shop do it.

YB has a China national guy who's a butcher. He fixes the brakes then goes for a round with your car. He heats them up to high temp IMMEDIATELY without gentle braking, and brakes violently straightaway and then say bedded in.

NEVER LET THEM DO IT FOR YOU. Brand new rotor 335mm COMPROMISED because of this guy. Never again. Do it yourself. The trick is GENTLE heat introduction.

--------------------

Where to get torque wrench? I searched everywhere, but found 1 shop at Jalan Besar x Dickson Road Google Maps buy the biggest version.

Re: Some interesting details on tyres, rims, brakes

Good tip...

but 98% of the mechanics dont really care about these things. good to find a wksp that does.

ive tried the following
Poh Heng (Fast, cheap pricing, but kinda sloppy work, no torquing)
Ray S (fast, average work, no torquing)
Stamford (rotated tires, did torquing, average)
Nankang at 176 sinming ( rotated tires there, average)
Leong Seng (current favorite, professional-looking balancing machine and alignment, with torquing, nice shop owners)

Will try Espace on my next trip.

We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future, when we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. wow gold, The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty task, hardly aware of our listless attitude towards life. The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight url=http://www.wowgoldvip.fr]wow gold[/url]. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult WOW Power leveling life. But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties. Their eyes and ears take in all sights and sound hazily, without concentration, and with little appreciation. It is the same old story of not being grateful for what we conscious of health until we are ill. I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some wow gold time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound. WOW Power leveling Now and then I have tested my seeing friends
