SMG or Auto?

Hi bros,

Is the SMG tranny for the 330Ci identical to the M3's or are they different?

I heard the Gen 1 SMG is rather jerky and this current version is somewhat better. Sorry if this is dumb question. I have absolutely no idea whether its the next Gen version since all BMW websites state SMG (for 330Ci that is). No drivelogic (what is that in the first place?) or SMG II??? I'm totally lost man!

Thanks for the help in advance!

well, i test drove the 330SMG before i bought my car and kinda hated it.. maybe its becos I dont know how to use it properly. Its vomit inducing!!

But acceleration is really phenomenal...

Why did you hate it?

the gear shift is too jerky... buah tahan.. but if you sit in some of the more experienced drivers, releasing the throttle just before the gear shifts helps lessen the neck snapping feeling...

Pretty uncomfortable for passengers.. my better half nearly puked...

Re: SMG or Auto?

Thats with reference to the pedal shifts right? How is it like when you drove it with auto mode?

WORSE!!!!

The "auto" is actually an automatic "manual"... so still jerks jerks jerks...

sport mode slight better....

Hi there,

SMG or Steptronic - hmmmm tough one ...i love my SMG !! its either u like it or hate it.

Jerky - yes, initially i had the same feeling but now used to it on a 330ci. I have no idea how it is on an M3 tho so cant comment. Guess it all boils down to shifting at the right rpm on SMG. Like SM says on 'auto', it's jerky (especialy fm 1st to 2nd gear) coz the rpm tends to change in the lower rpm (torque is max at or around 3900rpm i tink) range when driving in heavy traffic hence the so called jerkiness but its not that bad as ppl make it out. On 'sports' mode its even better or 'worse' depends
who's driving..haha..u really feel the kick and rush when accelerating !

On open roads like malaysia or track where u can push the rpm higher u wont feel that jerkiness at all.

Cheers !!

Hey there!

Hope all is well with you.... yup you are right. SMG is a "love-hate" relationship... from a pure driver's point of view, it is really adrenaline pumping. But when you have guests in your car, or you are not in the mood, it gets kinda irritating.. sigh... like they say, there is no perfect car!

Given a choice between an SMG and a manual, I would take a manual. but I would take an SMG over a stepronic. You need to learn how to drive an SMG... it takes a bit of time, but its not too bad once you master it.
