Should I......

Hi All,

Need advices from all the gurus here,

Should I "operate" my exhaust or change to Sebring ( my personal preference)?
Operating would cost $200....Sebring would cost me $800 odd.
Mine is 318iA E36..

Racebred,

I disagree. Real sweet. As long as you go to Fong Kim. Can't guarantee the other workshops but a certain Man was tried and tested and found to sound like a loud ripping fart even on a 320.

Operated Muffler gives a empty can sound, not nice IMO, wheras the Sebring or Remus gives a deep sound which is nice especially when the car fly past...

Tanzy....
Not all 320i with operated muffler sounds good one...

Wayansurfer,

Ya. Very hard to describe. Sounds very dry. Kinda like Evo 8 HKS exhaust on a 6 cylinder car. If you choose to operate, the sound will be determined by what the workshop uses to pack the box because all straight throughs are the same in design. It's just a perforated pipe in the box surrounded by packing material. I've seen a Remus and ACS box being cut open. All similar. Fong Kim offers scrambler bike exhaust packing that looks like chopped up T-shirt. It's the quietest. If you want it loud, they can give you the steel wool type. Ask for the ones from Remus or ACS which they remove when owners go to them to 'silence' their exhaust by changing packing material.

Wayansurfer,

Most find little to no gains on BMWs. The kind of gains we are talking about could easily be due to standard errors in dynographs. Even reputable tuners are quoting <10bhp for their aftermarket exhaust. Mostly psychological. Sound only.

Hmmm...some valuable points to ponder..
Well if I were to go for the Sebring whihc cost bout 800...not so much of a noticeable gains but only for the sound..
might as well I operate..but then again its illegal...haiiiiz.... :verysad:

Wayansurfer,

Who would know that you operate unless it is super loud? To absolutely prove it, they will have to down your exhaust and cut your box open. They have better things to do. If they want to catch illegal mods, just choose any Evo or WRX and they will find enough to meet quota.

I found my engine more revvy and willing to pull, lighter on the throttle to get the car going. But I think it also depends on the engine capacity of the ride to be operated.
