Nothing better to do so went to do some analysis of all these tie-ups between fuel and platinum credit cards to see gives better value overall, since ABN just sent me the platinum car this morning. Was trying to find out if there is any significant difference or was it just peanuts difference. Only comparing shell to caltex as these are the 2 fuels I ve tried so far on the bimmer.
Caltex/ABN amro-
FOr every $5 spent on the ABN card, u get $1 ABN point. Let s say over a period u charged $9k on the this card, so u will get 1800 ABN point, which according to ABN u could redeem for a $50 caltex petrol voucher. That all it is.
Shell/UOB-
Same as ABN card, every $5 spent on the UOB card earns $1 UOB point. Therefore if u spend $9k u also get 1800 UOB points. However the conversion of points to Shell petrol vouchers is a tad lower at 1000 pts for a $20 Shell petrol voucher. Effectively the 1800 UPB points will get you $36 worth in petrol voucher on an extrapolated basis [ vs ABN's $50 worth in caltex voucher], or $14 less attractive than ABN.
Now hang on, bcos the UOB card also comes with a Chip which participating merchants contribute to, like Shell is one of them, each $30 spent on shell petrol earns u an additional $1 stored in this Chip. So if you spent $9k at Shell over time, you earn $300 worth of this SMART$ stored in the chip.
Conclusion= based on this example of $9k charged to each credit card, Shell/UOB gives a total petrol rebate worth $300+$36 or $336, whereas Caltex/ABN only gives u $50. Which means the Shell/UOB is about 6.5 times better.
Has anyone done similar analysis with other tie-ups?
ps: switching back to shell from caltex next time, n will try a tankful of V power
