Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

Nothing better to do so went to do some analysis of all these tie-ups between fuel and platinum credit cards to see gives better value overall, since ABN just sent me the platinum car this morning. Was trying to find out if there is any significant difference or was it just peanuts difference. Only comparing shell to caltex as these are the 2 fuels I ve tried so far on the bimmer.

Caltex/ABN amro-
FOr every $5 spent on the ABN card, u get $1 ABN point. Let s say over a period u charged $9k on the this card, so u will get 1800 ABN point, which according to ABN u could redeem for a $50 caltex petrol voucher. That all it is.

Shell/UOB-
Same as ABN card, every $5 spent on the UOB card earns $1 UOB point. Therefore if u spend $9k u also get 1800 UOB points. However the conversion of points to Shell petrol vouchers is a tad lower at 1000 pts for a $20 Shell petrol voucher. Effectively the 1800 UPB points will get you $36 worth in petrol voucher on an extrapolated basis [ vs ABN's $50 worth in caltex voucher], or $14 less attractive than ABN.

Now hang on, bcos the UOB card also comes with a Chip which participating merchants contribute to, like Shell is one of them, each $30 spent on shell petrol earns u an additional $1 stored in this Chip. So if you spent $9k at Shell over time, you earn $300 worth of this SMART$ stored in the chip.

Conclusion= based on this example of $9k charged to each credit card, Shell/UOB gives a total petrol rebate worth $300+$36 or $336, whereas Caltex/ABN only gives u $50. Which means the Shell/UOB is about 6.5 times better.

Has anyone done similar analysis with other tie-ups?

ps: switching back to shell from caltex next time, n will try a tankful of V power

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

hey, good info... have been using the shell/uob combo for the past 5 yrs. mainly because shell is right next to my place. but good to know that i've been getting abt 3.7% rebate (336/9k) :)

waiting for your reports on citibank, hsbc, dbs, ocbc, stanchart....

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

I just realised my HSBC platinum card also has a tie up with Caltex....oops sorry forgot this one. HSBC has an extra 3% rebate on petrol which HSBC will net off your monthly statement. So if u charge up to $9k in caltex petrol at some point in time, u get the $300 in return. Ok I need to also check how many HSBC$ required for how much worth of Petrol vouchers. akan datand :)

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

You is rich man. Platinum card left right centre.

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

I thought the titanium visa with Shell gives the most bang for bucks.

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

apparently I checked on HSBC website, the platinum card gets a 5% rebate on petrol charges worr......but cant seem to find anything for redemption of HSBC$ for petrol vouchers. Will ask them next week.

Oh OCBC titanium card with Shell? Saw that one didnt try to ask for one bcos pretty annoyed with some of the current cards n trying to consolidate n use only 2 cards, one for petrol largely n the other as a backup, preferably not both visas in case one doesnt work. Gonna get rid of the AMEX card, really lousy.

Nowadays, platinum card has no more status........... just look at those offered by ABN and DBS....< $50k and u cn get one?

No ill intention to anyone though :)

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

I stick with Caltex and using Citibank Dividend card to pay. 5% rebate in cash every quarter. In this case, I am also entitled to Caltex points but not sure if I am able to redeem for petrol voucher.

Recently I received 6 (or was it 8) $5 voucher from Caltex for being a loyal customer. They seems to do this once a year. For every $40 you pump, they deduct $5 off, on top of that, you get the regular 10% the petrol price. So for $40 I pumped, I pay only $31. For that $31, I get additional 5% dividend from Citibank. Sounded like a good deal to me.

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

citibank dividend platinum is the one giving the 5%..the regular non-platinum is only giving 3% if im not wrong...friends i know seem to be divided between the dividend's rebates Vs. UOB's Smart$ which can be used to offset bills at many places such as restaurants and kiosks...though some still say cash is king...my 2 pennies

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

UOB Smart$ earned from Shell can only be used on Shell purchases.

Re: Shell/UOB vs. Caltex/ABN-Amro

If I am not wrong, the UOB Smart$ can also be used at Metro for shopping and some other retail/dining outlets... check the UOB website for more details...

Woow sounds like caltex users benefit best from citi dividend card.

Ok I did some research n found that indeed as mentioned by someone before, Shell users should get the best deal when used with OCBC titanium.

Shell stations now offer 10% discount on fuel. with OCBC titanium, u get a 5% rebate on fuel charges. That 15% liao. The OCBC card also earns pts at $1 = 1 point[other banks mostly $5=1pt] , however...however...howwwww...evv...eerrrrrr......rrrrrrrr....r.....rrrr..rrrrr
you get $20 petrol voucher for redeeming 4500 pts off the OCBC pts accumulated. And it is a SPC card....bluuuu. But I was told they will revise rewards for 2006 in May, and may have a shell voucher instead ...kekekeke
Plus.....on top of that.....shell escape pts also can redeem petrol vouchers.....

So Shell/OCBC Titanium smells good !
