Yes, it is a 3 door hatchback version of the E36, sometimes referred to as the E36/5. More powerful versions had a "ti" suffix e.g. 318ti and 323ti (neither were sold here I think).
The front section is the same as the E36 sedan, but it has quite a few E30 parts, including the rear suspension, aircon vents etc.
You should definitely test drive before you buy. It doesn't drive like an E36 sedan or coupe (nor an E30 for that matter).
