hi,

planning my year end trip to usa in november.
wish to cover 3 places namely SF, LA and LV by self drive, total 15 days
am considering to take direct flight to SF or LA
air ticket price is the same by sia. depart and return date/time is okay for both.

SG LA, Airbus A380, stopover Tokyo, total flight time = 20+- hours
SG SF, Boeing 777, stopover Seoul, total flight time = 17+- hours

what's your pick ? LA or SF ?

any comment is appreciated. thanks in advance.

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

SF since you save 3 hrs each way. That's a lot.
Also LAX is horrible...

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

i plan to tour the world too.
how should i plan my flight?

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

it's an option. however, the extra charge on air ticket is a consideration.

Why not take the sin-sfo route there and then the lax-sin route back?

As for immigration issues, i think its much better now. About 40mins from deplane to arrival hall?

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

Depends on which class of cabin u take. If economy, then as short as possible. If business or 1st class, u will ask the captain to fly a few more hours circling the sky just for fun

haha ... valid point. hard truths :D

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

suggested trips:

a. fly to SF
b. stay at San Jose (cheaper), drive to SF for shopping, fisherman W etc
c. Eat nice seafood at santa cruz etc
d. drive north to lake tahoe for ski
d. slow drive south on HW1 from SF to LAX, taking the coast road, don't take 101, boring
e. visit Universal studio, Disney L, drive to B hill at LAX.
f. drive to San Diego, visit zoo ...haahahaha
h. drive to LV, get discount from hotel in LA, booked in advance for special rate thru weekend, much cheaper, else may cost you at least US$200/night at luxor if last min booking
i. drive to grand canyon
j. drive to hoover dam, solid
k.. drive back to LAX
h. flight back spore

by then, you almost visited all the places :)

Maybe your tread suay me. Now me got to do a 13 days US trip in sept! :)
Nvr like going States.

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

thanks for everyone feedback and advice.
have decided and purchase air ticket Spore -> San Francisco & Los Angeles -> Spore
will drive from SF to LA thru pacific coast highway
another consideration, what car to rent .. hehe

a. normal sedan -> jap or usa made? :D
b. convertible -> too flashy?, i think nov have many rains :(
c. suv -> since this is 1st time driving LHD and i rarely drive suv, not sure i can manage it good.

check with a few friends that car rental company outside airport is abit tricky. a lot shops manned by prc, indian and amigo. sometime what you put in your request on the internet and you don't get it when you go there. then they will give you the face, take it or leave it attitude and threaten if you don't take it ...

any recommendation on car rental ? rent in SF (city) and return in LA (city or airport). go for reputable join like hertz, avis, thrifty, etc?
car for 2 passengers + 2 luggages + shoppings :)

thanks!

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

get from avis......

if plan to go ski at north lake taoho, then get 4x4, else just get normal. 4x4, suv is under special/sport cat

large size, more comfortable for long trip.

price between compact, mid and large is like a couple of US$ only so think over.

buy all insurance to cover, pay but peace of minds.

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

Not sure about SF, perhaps you could get from more bigger companies like Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc.

In LA, I always pick up my cars from Midway Car Rental at LAX. You don't really need an SUV if its just gonna be 2 pax. A regular 550i would be a nice ride to have or if budget allows a S63 or 760Li would be a nice cruiser!

Tips for u... Not all rental cars come with a GPS... You can rent from them but quite pricey... Maybe around 30-50USD per day... My advice is to get from Amazon.com before you fly so you can receive the GPS after you reach the hotel... Way cheaper and you get to keep it

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

thanks. i will use my iphone gps that does not require data network to work

For car rental
1. Go with the big rental firms -- Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, etc. If your car breaks down, you can get replacement car at the nearest city
2. Go orbitzs.com and get the best deal. Sedan offerings are quite similar amongst the big renters.
3. For such long trips, don't book exotic cars: most are 5-10x more expensive, and have mileage limits per day. It gets worse when you drop off the car in a different city.
4. Book airport pick-up and drop off
5. Make sure you specify pick-up drop-off at different locations. Be prepared for substantial premium.
6. Difference between compact and full size car is minimal -- choose compact and save money. All of them are at least 3L engine size, so don't worry about engine capacity.
7. Decline all insurance -- in US your credit card covers it
8. Decline fuel pre-purchase, but top up before you return the car!!!! If not they charge you 2-3 times normal fuel prices to top up for you

Just buy a Garmin -- its cheaper than renting for 13 days. You can load your SG map when you return and use it in Singapore for free. Wouldn't use iPhone even if somehow you have the map pre-loaded -- it's turn-by-turn navigation is not quite up to dedicated device standard.

Re: SG to LA or SF flight

for point no 7 means if i book the car through credit card via internet, insurance is covered - 100%?

when i did my self drive in nz, i purchase their daily insurance too which is quoted together with car rental (incl or excl insurance)
