Running w/o O2 sensor???

Guys, can our car run w/o O2 sensor? My car previous 2nd owner did some change form stock extractors to Hiop and i notice that the bottom downpipe thats connects to the cat is welded on,which tells that the whole system has been modifed and the best thing is..i did not see any O2 sensor connected to the pipes @ all. I saw the stock diagram that the O2 sensor shd be connected to the downpipe area nearest to the cat convertor but now there is none. Even the Hiop headers O2 sensor position is seal off..was wondering if no O2 sensor how come engine check lite never come on? i am still monitoring the fuel consumption but from the "65" litre mark it drop to slightly below the "60" litre mark and i did ard 60KM..wondering if there is no O2 sensor present or the sensor is short to ground which prevent the ck lite from appearing the dme will be fool and makes the car run rich which = high consumption?

Any gurus can advise if no O2 sensor present what will be the effects for the car? Currently ride is smooth but i can sense that the fuel sips like water...

Yes, without the o2 sensors, your car will throw a EPC (enviromental protection control) light. The engine runs closed loop to control the mixture (AFR) and reduce emissions.

I am assuming that you drive a M54 engine. The o2 sensors are located in the engine bay just below the right side. You can see the connectors on the side of the black engine cover. The connectors are black in colour, fat like a marker and about 2/3 the length. There are 2 of them there.

cheers

Mine is M50 engine so there is only one O2 sensor located near the cat convertor which is now missing but i did not notice if the connector for the sensor is there there(from car chassis),

It is probably there, just hidden from view, (mounted on top of pipe).

I do not think any exhaust shop will do such a thing. The O2 sensor output is not a flat DC voltage but a varying voltage that follows the same frequency as the engine revs. So they cannot just ground the sensor or power it.

cheers
